    My City's recycling / dump...

So I just made my first dump / recycle where I live and it's free. I go in and drop off my 11 tv's in to a semi and I was like OMG!!! Tons of everything, I asked the guy that was there if I can take some with me he said no that is a felony ok no thanks. Then when I was leaving I said can I ask people for there stuff he said if I let you do it then I will have to let everyone do it, that sucks! So I asked if I sat out front and asked people for there stuff and he said what you do out side of these gates I don't care. So it has been 20 minutes, I wonder if it is worth my time? They are only open twice a week for 4 hours each day. I took a picture of inside the trailer but I am not sure how to do that yet. Just wanted to share.

I look at it like this, the "worst" anyone can tell you is NO and if you have a few hours to spare it might be worth your time. Keep in mind that if you're going to approach people there is a way to do it!!!

I am sure someone is going to give you a hard time.

The City makes money off scrap brought to the facility. They are not going to like you getting into there pockets.
It may be legal, I don't know, but they can pressure you!

If the guy said he didn't care I'd try it. Good luck. If someone from the city does come by (unlikely) they'll just tell you to leave. They won't have you arrested !

You were dumping TV's at the dump??? Our scrap yard pays 10 cents lb here.

Many times I thought about doing that. Sit near the dump with a sign on the back of our trailer. Thought it pan out alright. You've rekindled that idea. We will try it next Sat for kicks. Will update with the outcome.

We also have another thing going for us. We take furniture also. Usually haul scrap in the pickup and haul furniture and bulky items in our trailer.
Some days we make more in furniture than scrap. Furthermore, it opens more doors for us because we recycle both scrap and furniture.

First we're going to make signs for the back of the trailer.
    "Free Tim Horton's coffee
Dump your TVs, furniture, and scrap here for free.
and we'll unload the items for you."

Weather may play a big role in this though. It's getting cold here now.

We're open to any and all suggestions...

They even pay for the old wooden ones and the big screen plastic units too.... I know we're spoiled in that department.
They just started buying them last month but all the yards are around here.
Wish I seen it coming because I wouldv'e landed some contracts before hand. Now even scrapper is bringing in heaps of tvs.

@ Diva, they pay .10 cents per pound after you take everything out that you can use? There are two places the county dump where you have to pay to dump and the City's recycling where it is free to dump just about anything but batteries and oil. So I didn't think the tv's were worth anything after I took most of the good stuff out. I guess I should ask my scrap yard.

Nope. The TVs have to be intact.
I really don't know how much copper you get out of monitors and tv's. Is it really worth taking it appart or selling it whole for 10 cents lb?
    Does anyone know the answer????

at $0.10/lb i would never strip them. just the reassurance that the yard will save me the time and headache of getting rid of those vacuum tubes is enough to not even think about stripping them. i wish they did that down here

I had the same idea but haven't tried it yet. I was going to make big sign that people could see in time to stop on their way to the dump. I'd be very interested in seeing how that goes and if anyone hassles you about it.

Where I live there is the recycling center and the landfill. You probably would get in trouble for trying to hijack stuff heading to the recycling center but I'm thinking that the landfill may not care as much, although, you are right, they do get paid for what is dropped off. I just wanted to try to get mostly electronics there anyway.
