Anybody here deal with used oil filters?

I just happened to be scrapping a pile of stuff and ran across an oil filter that I ended up scrapping, not sure where I got it.

It was very clean, so I'm not sure if it was used or not. Do any of you scrap filters from oil change places? Do they drain them before giving them to you? Are they worthwhile or too big a mess?

I haven't thought of that, but my own i throw in there after it drains, although i get very few, only from my own oil changes. I also put the old oil in a 5 gallon bucket, and after it's set undisturbed long enough i'll skim from the top to use as chain lube in the chainsaw. Once it's full enough i'll take it by there to be recycled

I got the crusher and furnace from a grant. Only worth it if you get a crap load.

The mechanic at my job said that the guy that pickups the used oil also picked up a 55 gallon barrel 3/4 full of filters and said they paid close to $180 for the barrel. ill see if i can get more info tommorrow at work. They also paid for the used oil but didnt say what they paid.

hey thanks Burly, do my own oil changes and always just drained 'em and tossed in the trash.

I have successfully burned used motor oil in my woodstove, small amounts at a time. couple different ways to do it.

I would like to receive the name and contact of the company that picks up the used oil and filters. Thanks so much!

A little tip from last week. I found out the hard way.
If you are doing a oil change on your car using one of those Supercheap (harbour freight like) plastic drain pans.

Don't drop the filter into the pan when you take it off, it cracks the pan and it leaks oil from then on..

i think most of the oil change places deal with Lucas Lane Inc. They seem to be the primary recycling outfit specifically for this.
