Hey guys, I am wanted to see if anyone could help me out. There is an abandoned building near where I live. It has been left to rot for about 20 years, maybe more. Thing is its full of metal. I would like to get permission to take it out, but I have no idea who it belongs to and wouldn't even begin to know who to contact. Any thoughts? Also, it looks like people have started helping themselves to the inside already.

With unpaid taxes it probably has reverted back to your city or county. We have one like that in Warsaw that has sat for 30 some years that belongs to the city now, and it costs them too much to have the property cleaned up that it's just sitting there falling apart. I think their waiting for it to fall down. The place used to make brake pads/shoes and clutches years ago and the property is all contaminated with asbestos.

Do you have a city or county office where they keep tax maps? That'll let you know who owns it. If the county or state owns it, you likely can't get permission to go on the property because of liability concerns.

I would go to your courthouse and talk to the reg of deed's to find out who owns the property then go and talk to them let them know up front what you will and wont do. I would also make a little contract up stating that you release the home owner of all liability if you where to get hurt. Sometimes this will make it a little easier since they know that you wont sue the pants off of them give them a copy and you keep the other. It seems to work good for metal detecting.

Worth looking into, bought a house near me with 5 lots for 165. Sold bout 600 worth of tools and what not out of it. Torn down the house and buildings and fixing to plant it for hay, make sure and tell em you want to clean up the property, that's what helped me land the abandoned property, and they were glad to get it off the back property tax list. Cost me 4 bucks a year for taxes now. Anyhow good luck
