I am a newbie here and my 70 year old dad and I just started our dream together 2 weeks ago...working together and for ourselves. I know the business pretty well. Started off as a roll-off driver, then scale operator, then buyer, then broker for an exporting company.
I have been watching some water meter auctions lately. Mostly 3/4" or 5/8". Some with brass bottoms and some with iron bottoms. I know they weigh about 5 lbs. with 4lbs. of that being brass. I am getting $2.30/lb. for red brass right now or $1.40 for the meters intact from a company in Atlanta. That means each meter is worth about $10 at the most. The last couple of weeks, the meters have been selling for almost $12/piece.
So, my question is, where are these meters going? They are being bought for more than scrap value, plus there is transportation involved for the winners at an additional costs. Are they being exported for reuse somewhere else in the world?
Any info would be great!
