    Idea for Degaussing Cables

Had an idea for stripping degaussing cable after reading about ballasts from light fixtures. It was mentioned that freezing the ballasts to harden the glue so when you take them apart the glue should be brittle and easy to smack with a hammer to separate it. Going to try to freeze a few cables to harden the tape. Then take a hooked blade in my box cutter and put a slice along the length of cable and then peel out the copper from the tape. If the glue on the tape is brittle it should pull out pretty easy. Any thoughts or am I just spinning my wheels? I have a 96 quart tote of these that I have been putting off doing to since they are a pita. Got a few in the deep freezer now and should be frozen in about an hour.

Personally, I never thought they were bad. I just run a razor blade down the cable and it strips pretty easy. It seems they are just wrapped in electrical tape.

i would do the opposite, sit them out in the sun for a hour to soften up the electrical tape than cut and peel

I usually cut the cable into three or four smaller sections and unwrap the tape. I find it easier to handle and faster than stripping the whole cable at once.

I am interested to see how the freezer method works out though.

Ok so the freezer method actually worked to a degree. Took the cables out and cut them into 2 ft pieces. Freezing them helped to make the tape a bit brittle and allowed for the blade to go thru it easier. the wire was still glued to the tape but did seem to pull off a bit easier as well. 2 things i am going to do different next time is cut the cables to length before freezing and let them freeze for a bit longer. Hoping the longer they freeze the easier the wire will come off the tape. I have tried all the above methods that everyone mentioned, just trying to see if there is a faster way.

I find that if you are sitting at a table, put the wire or degaussing cable over the other side, hold knife (I like the drywall knife) with one hand steady and pull the wire with the other. If you have the right angle on the knife, you can cut the tape all along one side of the wire. Takes practice, I would'nt even consider any other way.

I don't do many tvs/crts but the few I have done I put through my stripper machine and it worked well each time. Mike.

As I recall about $120 but I think they may have gone down in price. One other thing it has been suggested that I should replace the set screws with American made harder ones than the cheap ones that came with it. It does tend to get out of adjustment even though I torque the screws down. I will get back to striping wire this winter when other things(ewaste) slows. Mike.

Lot of work going on here just for degaussing cables. Use a sharp boxcutter then start pulling the tape loose, if you go the correct way it'll come off in a couple of pieces (sometimes 1 piece), but if you start out unpeeling the wrong way the wraps come apart and it'll take twice as long to finish. Usually do them in about 2 min. each.

If you have enough like I do boiling water is worth it, it makes it much more pliable.

Actually the easiest thing I have found is using a bench grinder with a wire wheel. Use the wire wheel to grind off one side of the tape then you just open it up and pull the wire out.

I run mine through a wire stripper like this.

I use a cutoff wheel to slice both sides of the fat part where the 2 wires come in that are taped, and separate that with a razor blade. Rest goes through the stripper.

I was contemplating using different diameters of pipe with a blade coming down into it similar to the machine pictured in the previous post. Has anyone tried anything like that?

I use a wire stripper. It takes me about 2 minutes to do one. Their really no different than any other wire.
