I have palmed some cash to the yard workers that bust their ass unloading my scrap. They take it with a bro hug style hand shake. I did notice the yard now has signs up that workers will be fired if they receive tips. I hate that. I like it when a 20 year old unloads my scrap and would like to reward their hard work. I just don't want them fired or any cheating favors. I just want in and out ASAP and hate being sweaty when I leave the yard.

Is that at Walmart or the yard.

They try to help unload me, but everything is so organized, that the buckets are on the ground faster than they can weigh them.

mine tried to help once...I asked them not to. I have system to the things in my van..lol. Them helping only screws it all up or make a mess of things. So like Mech..I bring them treats (doughnuts, Pizza/etc) and allow them a frosty beverage from my cooler. Not adult ones though, only soda/water/tea/etc. Once every month or two I'll swing by an drop of a case of suds for them. Only 4 guys work my yard so a case works for them..lol.

So yea I tip..just not in cash. They seem to appreciate it, and thats all that really matters to me.

Too me a gift card is the same as cash(ask any crack head) but a cold drink on a hot day is another thing. One yard I use the help dose not help people unload but two others that I use they will help,I think they help unload to help get you out quiker. I'll never understand why people wait till they get to the scrap yard to clean thiere scrap.

I also go to a small mom and pop yard all my metal is presorted and the guys love to see me come. they even help unload my steel because they know there is some coffee in the truck waiting for us to get done with weighing. If it is a slow day i might hang around for a bit talking shop and have a great relationship with the guys and gals. I only gave cash once it was near christmas and they opened up a little early for me the look on their faces when the cash hit their hands was priceless.

Nothing gets the blood pressure up quicker then having to wait in the shred line while some a$$ breaks down his crap and I have a tough time keeping my mouth shut at that point.

No! More and more places people are looking for tips. If it is not a food server, barber, cab ride or valet, I don't tip them. Some jobs are based on tips others are not! If I go to the donut shop and the person puts the donuts in the box, that is there job, why tip them... If you take your dog to the groomer do you tip them! LOL

I don't but some do..actually tip their pet groomer. I see it at the local PetSmart and other dog places here on my sandbar.

yard I frequent, labor has to bring you a bin with the lift truck, eyeball the stuff, help you unload, then fork the load to the scale.

owner runs the scale. owner pays cash, with odd dollar amounts paid in dollar coins

I give the laborer one of the coins, every time. it's just a token, but it's something. I'm very small potatoes, but I never have to wait for a bin.

that seems fair, especially since the owner runs the scale, and most likely knows you give the guy a dollar and that it is just one dollar

I have a bit of an "in" with my yard... I occasionally do some tear downs for my yard on electrical panels and sometimes I can't get in until sundays or something.... one of the yard guys goes in early every day including weekends and cleans up his own scrap (him and the yard have something worked out) so I sometimes can go in before they are open or on days off and get rid of a load of steel if need to get it unloaded to make more room... so I can go in and unload and he will make a note and next time I am in, it gets added to my list.... so I do throw the guy a 6 pack now and then... but I also do him favors too... I have taken home patio sets and lawnmowers to his house (he doesn't drive)... and ya, my yard is really good about this kind of stuff for their employees... this one was hurt there a number of years back, so even tho all was covered in workers compensation, he's still taking care of his people the extra mile.

    BINGO!
exactly whatI was thinking. These guys are full wage earners. I never have and never will tip them. They could lose their job and you could lose your privileges to sell at that yard.

If you are tipping for help unloading, i think that is acceptable. Especially if he owner is right there. He will make sure there is no funny business going on.

I think it would be right to tip the ones deserving. Everyone can tell the deserving ones that work for their money hoping for a raise for their loyalty.

And it is usually the bosses nephew sitting on his butt that gets the raise ,and complaining to the boss that john doe took a tip and he didn't get one. Therefor tipping is against company policies.
