Need Advice from the Pros!

Hope you all don't mind me eavesdropping on your forum, but I came across it while doing some research and was impressed by all of the great information. I have a very specific question that I think only scrappers can answer. I just noticed that my kids' elementary school has lockers that are in great need of replacement. They no longer open and close correctly and many of the bottoms are rusting. In researching how to raise the money to replace them, it occurred to me that the old lockers may have some value (but I am completely ignorant in this area). So, my question to the professionals is: Is there any money in 300-400 old metal school lockers, some which are rusting? If so, how would I go about finding someone to sell them to and would the money gained be significant enough (over $500 or so?) to go to the trouble?

Hopefully they are the old, heavy type instead of the thin sheet metal ones. While I typically advocate re-using items, the condition you describe suggests they are good candidates for the scrap pile. I have a couple suggestions:

1: Put an add on craigslist listing them just as you described, plus using keywords like "scrap metal" or other stuff. You may get someone local that wants them for something other than scrap (which should bring more money) or others that will take them to the junk yard for cash. You wont get as much as if you hauled them yourself, but someone else is doing the heavy lifting.
2: Get your local PTA or a group of people to donate time/trucks/trailers to haul them off to the scrap yard and donate the proceeds for new lockers. You are looking at about $.10 per pound depending on what your local yard pays.

It sounds that they are unusable. You won't make no 500$ but more like 150$

If any are good...small businesses and even families have started using these in their home....coupke cans of rustoleum and a scotchbright pad...worth $75-100 for say 2. As far as transport...I might do them myself if youcan get a cocouple extra hands...use a dolly, handtrucks and rent a big rider truck. Load goods ones in 1st and bad o es in back....run to yard and drop off bad ones and then take rest back home or if enought rent a stoarge unit until you can sell them off after painting on craigslist...or no paint and sell for a bit more than scrap...pickup only.
