Keep your eyes open at the scrap yard

I was taking a load in today to the scrap yard, and as I always do look to see what is around the weigh in area. At the side I noticed a cheater bar there, one used by truckers to tighten the straps securing cargo to their trailer. I have a hotshot trailer that I had the same 4" ratchet straps put on my 32' trailer, so I use that same cheater bar. I have lost one before, and they cost $40 to replace. I asked if I could buy it, and if so how much. He said sure, 25 cent a pound for it. Weight was 7 pounds. Got a spare $40 cheater bar for $1.75. It pays to keep your eyes open and aware of your surroundings.

I tried unsuccessfully to buy the alum rims from my local yard yesterday.. They Pay .60/lb and I can take them to a core buyer for .85/lb.. Instant $25 profit per 100lbs. May just have to keep working on it.
I'm so into scrapping.. When my Steel Toe Boots Wear out, I cut the Steel out of them and recycle the Toe!

One of my yard owners said he is not legally allowed to re-sell on ebay...So my question is, is it legal to re-sell items like this or not? I don't want to put my yard in a weird position but I sometimes see things I'd like to have or use.

Don't cost anything to ask. I do not see why it would not be legal. They purchased the metal, it is theirs to do with as they please.

Maybe they don't have a seller's permit to sell to the public.

I just know that in CA, they would need one. Why not get one then? It's easy enough to get one, but then you have to track all of the sales tax you collect and make payments every year down to every month depending on volume. Not worth the hassle for them I bet.

As with everything though, you can do whatever you want until you get in trouble for it.

My yard won't sell anything. Once it hits the ground, it's theirs and they won't even consider offers. It pains me, because I see some sweet stuff all the time that people are throwing in the shred pile and I could make money on. Oh well.

the yard i bouy from is a family owned yard. Its cash right in his pocket and no receipt. They are technically a salvage yard. They routinely have working cars for sale in the $00-$1000 dollar range. They get people in daily who just go to search the pile. Things like decent looking lawnmowers, snowblower, quads, and such go pretty fast once they hit the pile. The other yard i buy from i just bought two 20" bike rims with tires for five bucks for the pair. Cheaper than the innertubes would of been to replace.

Also, t would be a good idea to have some clue to how much stuff cost at that yard and how much of it you have.
