How to make good money scrapping?

Hey, I'm new to the scrapping business and you guys are always polite and helpful when it comes to answering some questions I put up here, so I thought you can help me out with an issue I've been having.

I'm 21, life's been very difficult to me. I've been bed ridden, very sick and weak unable to stand, sit, eat and sleep for 2 years -- plus, in constant pain -- NON-STOP. My dad never taught me anything on how to be a man and pretty much just left me. So today, I'm fully healed and looking to learn and start a better life for myself.

I know a bit about scrapping and know a few good yards next to me.

Question: What can I do in the scrapping business to make sure I have enough money to pay for a car (400$ per month) and an apartment (1000$ per month) -- every month -- that's my goal.

I just want to live a normal life like everyone else. What would you recommend me doing in order to get on the right track. Please point me in the right direction -- thanks!!!

start curb shopping and following leads, put up some craigslist ads, somtimes its easier to find scrap if you buy it, get some business cards and fliers made up, learn as much as you can, set goals, plan your work and work your plan
I buy and sell all types of scrap and escrap. I buy specialty and hard to sell escrap. I buy resale items. PM me or contact me at jghilino@hotmail.com
I AM ACTIVELY BUYING ESCRAP OF ALL TYPES. BOARDS, RAM, CPUS AND MUCH MORE

If yoy dont have alot of space...ewaste...best bang for the buck in terms of $$$ to items....and really you should be looking at reselling as muvh of that as you can vs scrapping it...if it works or say a laptop...sell it as used 8r a parts machine. If you go curb hunting and have little space...get any cord/wireyou can snip...again good $$$ and you can pputin a 50 gal trah can to store.

If you have space and a way to trabsport then take it all of course. I would try to find resale items if I were you...again biggest bang for you buck. If I buy a non working laptop for $1-4, I can sell as a parts machine for $20+. Same with cell phones...

My father was less than what he should have been, I had to take my mentors where I could find them when I was younger, uncles when they were around, friends fathers, etc.

One of my friends fathers was in WWII, he fathered my friend after he had already retired. He was what I would call a man with true grit. He survived WWII as a B17 pilot, 2 tours. he won several medals, lost close friends, a finger which funny enough was his middle finger, shrapnel. After the war he purchased a piece of property, made the brick from the clay on his property with sand, built his house himself, what I would call a true man.

He had a saying that I like to repeat whenever I am given a chance to do so. It went something like this.

If you truly desire to be a success, at whatever it is you are intending to do, all you have to do is try as hard as you can for as long as it takes.

It's a very simple saying, but says a lot in it's simplicity. And here I am passing it along to you, I hope it serves you well. It sounds you have a true desire, and you intend to employ it. I wish you the best of luck but I have a feeling you are not really going to need a lot of it.

I am going to talk about your $1400 a month plan. Forget about it. Start where you are. Work with what you have. If you have a car pull out the back seat if needed to make larger hauls, many others have done it. Every time you sell hold back money for more tools and so you can buy scrap in the future. Much of what I get I buy.

Spend you extra time studying about scraping, the very best source are the old threads here on the forum and some(no all) the videos on youtube.

In stead of "needing" a $400/mo. truck payment pay chash when you can. I bought a working Jeep Cheroke for $450 cash and I could pack a lot in it if I needed to(already have a cargo van and a pick up).

I was on dialysis for over 5 years and a little over a year ago I got a kidney transplant and scraping has been my physical therapy. It has kept me metally active and I needed that most of all.

We have one member I recall who had no job no money and a wife and kid(s) and of course bills. As I recall he reported back in about a year he had money, bills were paid and enough left over to take the family on a real vaction. There are lots of stories of success on the forum.

Here's one tip that Cory passed on a while back that I and others have used, find a fire extingusher company(sell and service fire extingushers for businesses) ask if they have any out of date fire extingushers. I got an entire pick up tuck load for free. Just try to get them empty so you don't have to dispose of the dust inside.

Best of luck you have gotten some really great advise, Mike.

Break everything down. Don't throw everything in shred especially air conditioners.

Wow, awesome advice. You nailed. I told him generally the same thing. Anyhow, I notice you had some major health issues in the past, how are you doing and what's your energy level like?

the only thing I see mike touched on above, I very seriously doubt I will have another car payment EVER again, put an ad out saying you buy cars running or not, you will be absolutely amazed at the cars people will drive to your house for $300

Look at what everyone else is scrapping and do the opposite. There is a gold mine out there in scrap that nobody ever talks about. Go to your local newspaper and see if you can buy their litho ($0.70 lb.) or go to all your local machine shops and try to buy their tungsten carbide ($10.00 lb.) or your local shooting range and buy their range lead ($0.41 lb.) and brass shells ($2.02 lb.). Most of these companies aren't scrap saavy, and would be happy to have someone take this unwanted "junk" off their hands, while also making a little money.

It's not gonna happen overnight. Most forum members have fostered a relationship for months, if not years before they landed the account.

Be open and honest with people. Be on time. Say what you mean and mean what you say.

And finally...it takes money to make money. Don't think that dollar bills are going to start falling from the sky. Invest in sweat equity and it will pay dividends.

Like any business you need to have a steady flow of regular customers, you did not say where you are located big city or small town, the best source of steady customers in my experience are auto body and repair shops, try to develop a couple of regular stops, most shops are looking for a scrap man that they know will pick up there scrap on a regular basis, show the guys you are comeing around say mon wensday Friday if you keep at it, the ice breaker pick up will happen, stay positive the other ideas before me are all good the key is to have your regulars and then fill in with the rest, good luck auto tech,s love donuts,in the morning.

Dont try to get rich or make a **** ton off of one thing like most people try to do.You can pay more and get more but make less.Where you make the money is in the quantity.
I deal with mainly cars.I dont see how driving around for hours a night trying to get scrap spending fuel and such is worth it unless you hit a motherload.

But you have to start somewhere i guess as far as a payment goes i dont have one but i plan on buying a truck next year and will have a payment.
