One Hour of Scrapping = 5 Hours in the Gym

    One Hour of Scrapping = 5 Hours in the Gym

    Is it just me or is anyone else developing a muscle-man physique from scrapping. At this time of the year scrapping is at its peak and hitting the gym is not a big priority. However, I have noticed I don't need barbells when there are microwaves, tvs, fridges, stoves, etc. By the way, it's probably a good idea to use proper lifting technique to save the wear and tear on your back. I primarily sleep on a hard surface to stabilize and align back muscles. What other health tips can you point to from scrapping?

    I only started scrapping a few weeks ago and I am already seeing muscles I never had before. It's def a good workout. When i go to the scrap yard sometimes i see this older guy who is most likely on drugs or homeless but he is more ripped than any gym rat ive seen. He hauls a garbage can full of scrap around all day collecting ****.

    Ha! I get all the exercise I need between scrapping, filling the cooler, lifting the cooler, emptying the cooler, and walking. I walk a lot in the course of a day. :P

    Health tips...

    1. Get out an walk! Yes riding in the truck/car/van/etc is all fine an dandy, but walking will help keep you lifting, and not sucking wind when your out working on a hot day. Seems to for me. Oh an you'll be surprised the stuff you find while walking, whether more scrap, or even contacts. Some of my best ones have come from just taking a stroll an popping in on businesses on my route, or talking with folks I pass. Don't gotta do the speed walk thing..just get out there an do it, however it works for you.

    2. Fresh air..remember it's out there. Work outside if you can, enjoy the outdoors..it won't kill you, unless your doing something silly.

    3. Lift with your knees people! As someone who did a lot of shipping/receiving when younger, you will thank me for this. I've had my share of back injuries an it's always come from being in a hurry when lifting. Either forgetting to lift with the knees, or turning quick while carrying something. If it's to heavy for you, get a buddy, family member, neighbor's kid..etc.

    ...that's all I got. It works for me, and keeps me my awesome handsome, wonderfully witty self.

    An before you ask again Tater..My head fits behind my monitor cause it's a wide screen.

    Yep. I moved 1854 lbs of scrap metal Sun/Mon which equals 4 loadings/offloadings and included furnaces and stoves I lifted by hand into my truck. I have no problem with them any more like i did when I first started out as a weakling lol. my arm muscles are pretty good now and even my doctor said I look strong lol.

    Moving scrap is a great workout, its good clean work, heavy work and keeps you in shape for sure.

    Lol, now - I even overthrow stuff into the bin at the scrap yard not realizing I'm stronger than I think I am. ''Dangit, now I gotta go to the back of the bin and pick up that grill I just toss over the backside''

    I lost a lot of weight since starting scrapping and m keeping it off, even in the winter when you tend to be more couch potato and I dont huff and puff when lifting scrap into the truck or unloading. My blood pressure also seems to be down which is good too.

    Wow, that is freakin awesome man. All you need to have is a great diet and you are at the top of the food chain.

    One thing I learned a few years ago is to control your breathing. Inhale before lifting and exhale while lifting. It makes everything feel a little lighter, and I have noticed that it forces me to use correct form when lifting.

    Lol TheRecylcer! Considering how poorly thought out my diet is - SpaghettiO's, beer and Funyuns - I'm surprised I'm healthy as I am!!

    I figure I'm sweating out the bad stuff (along with the good on hot days) and it all boils down to the physical activity keeping all of us strong.

    In away you're right, but understand this. Our bodies are like a finely tuned self sustainable machine. As result, if we want ultimate power output we must supply it with optimum fuel aka food. I want to be able to scrap for a long time, so I am willing to do all I can to be my physical best all the time. I'm just freakin happy with these monster guns I'm walking around with I called arms. Heck, even dudes walking with their woman are looking at me. I know some of these ladies would love to get a handful. My wife is loving it.

    Another *tip* coming from scrapping - with the amount of times i wash my hands during scrapping, I'm like totally anal at the stores with the germ swipes too.

    i haven't really been sick much since scrapping, I think the physical activity and amount of outdoor work has shortened colds to almost none existent as well as flu bugs.

    the sweating and runny noses during flu/cold season has kept those at bay.

    Excellent advice here folks. Like NA...I don't bother with some freaky diet..I eat what I want, but i also burn it off while out working, or walking, or whatever. An I drink a lot of beer, eat red meat like it's going out of style, and I love my bread, an I will punch anyone in the nose who tries to take it away!

    The key is to move in my opinion. If all you do is sit..don't be surprised when the weight doesn't come off. More people should realize this an we wouldn't have silly fab diets like atkins, etc. When I worked for Borders Books & Music, we'd have people come in, monthly an pick up that new "OMG BURN THE FAT AWAY BY EATING THIS WAY!" only thing they ended up losing was their money.

    I'm beyond caring if I have 24 inch guns..I'm not a wrestler or NFL player. haha! More power to those that do tho, just not my thing. I will say one thing, while I may not have huge arms..I'm toned, an thats good enough for me. I also have a 6 pack..every night../zing!

    Come to think of it, I haven't been sick in forever. That's awesome it's scrapping and keeping busy.

    I was out of football training for about 4 months in which I was scrapping, went back and lifted my highest bench ever at 315lbs and the rest was pretty darn close to where I left off at. when you have to load a 5300lb car with cable pullers you get quite a workout haha not to mention all the tons I loaded and unloaded by hand
