Question need advise on my first opportunity to purchase servers: what should I offer$$$

okay, mainers I am taking a risk, but here is the orginal link with photos. I just wanted one last moment for any you veteran escrappers to tell me .15 to .20 cents a pound and no more. I am excited, I hope I don't offer .25 cents lb? LOL

http://maine.craigslist.org/sys/4052035401.htmlneed groups opinion and recommendations on how much to buy these for:
here is the details from a closed computer place here in maine:

Total weight of the remaining items is about 2300 pounds,

About 31 Servers, 104 hard drives, then some various mother boards, SCSI cards, about 48 Intel CPU and other PC and Laptops that are not on the list.

Most of the 31 servers use copper heat pipes (copper tube mounted to a 2x2x.25 slug). The large server rack must weigh over 400 pounds.

5-10 servers various mother boards, and various cards that do not work that I’d just throw in. We were only selling the servers for 50-75 each in larger lots, $125 each on a one off basis. These servers were made by Network Engines in the US and are very heavy. I also have about 75 SCSI hard drive with on board SCSI controllers. so let me know if you are interested.

All in I (the owner) thinks its worth about $350,000 worth of equipment new, or about $14,250 on the used market, and we were looking for about $4500 for the remaining lot. I think there are a few random PCs and Laptops in the lot as well.

unless you want to get into the resell side of things I would offer scrap price of no more than $.15 a pound for everything.

Way too vague of a description for me to make an offer. I would have to see it in person.

here the scoop... If I'm gonna scrap it down.. seperate everything,, I pay 10cents a pound why.. TOO MUCH METAL...

now on the other hand.. If I'm called into a business and see the server running and operational.. I consider paying more for it, BUT BUT... do your reserach..

dont' want to be buying servers that are non 64bit and you don't want to buy a server that is fat and heavy.. business are getting away from them clunkers due to the

    electric bill.

Blade servers, and Dell slimline servers are the way people are going.

so before you buy for to resell check into it, look at new price and head over to the evil bay store and see what people are selling them.. and then wack off 75% of the cost of used and buy it

    for that mere 25% percent.

BUT RESEARCH FIRST OR PAY FOR IT

    Good luck.

My advice is don't spend much time on this. The seller wants more than scrap value for everything. Let him know if he doesn't have any luck selling them for use, you will buy them as scrap.

Those all look to be operational (or have the potential to be so) seeing as how they are still installed. I don't pay more than what i can get for shred on servers unless i am able to see them in person. I have won 2 or 3 server auctions where everything but the board was gone. Luckily i got them super cheap so i still made a decent profit.

Like others have said that is way more metal than board on those big fat things.

I also don't know near enough about servers to even begin to set them up for testing so i don't resell them either.

I too am of the opinion that the seller wants way more than scrap value for this lot.

all servers are NOT equal . some are worth $35 in scrap value, some are worth well over $200 scrap value. servers are like catalytic converters, ya pretty much gotta know what your buying.
That said .20/.25 is my max. the value in resale is only what some one will pay. and selling and shipping is a job all its own.

we did over 80,000 lbs of servers this past year. the average return was .56 per lb.
chances are this guy expects resale value. If he does don't waste much time on him valuable time could be spent on some one who is a realist. About half the servers we scrapped last year were working minus hard drives and, worth new between $600,000 to over $1 M each.

There out there, companies are still paying to have them hauled off. That is the hard part of escrap. finding the right connection. Hope this helps. mcw
