Weird situation at the yard. How would you handle it?

I haven't been scrapping as much recently because my regular job picked up to the point where I'm picking up a lot of overtime. A friend at work had talked to me about picking up scrap for extra money (he has a truck and I normally scrap out of my Explorer) so pretty much I started hauling just shred with him. Saves gas for me and we split the shred 50/50 and it's not something we do all the time anyway.

Alright here's the yard situation. We had enough on Friday to fill my truck and his. We both had empty computer towers (about 20 each) and then I had random smaller stuff and he had a couple of appliances and stuff like that. A very regular load. I've been going to this yard for a while and it's the first time we've gone where I wasn't in the truck with him, anyway he ended up 3 cars behind me on the scale. I pull up, the lady that's always at the window recognizes me and makes a comment about how she hasn't seen me in a while etc etc. I go around the back and pretty much unload my whole truck before I see him pulling back there. He said the lady at the scale started fussing at him saying that they don't take computers and she shouldn't accept anything in the back of his truck, he tries to explain to her that the computers are completely gutted she said she doesn't care and he can't throw them. At the same time no one said a word to me about throwing the computer shells that I tossed and I had most of the Dell shells that have a bunch of plastic.

I was thinking about calling and seeing what the problem was but not sure really what to say without messing myself over.

I would get a clear concise answer from them so you know.

so far it seems like only 1 scrapper might need to find a new yard, start poking around for the reason & you may not like what you hear.

I was thinking that as well. I know the guy from work and we don't really pick stuff up together, I'll grab stuff, he grabs stuff and we'll just haul the shred together and split it. I was wondering if maybe he brought a truckload of stuff he knows he's not supposed to bring. This is by far the best paying yard in the area and I'm friendly with near everyone that works there, to the point where when I was going regularly they'd give me computers that were thrown in the shred pile because they don't deal with them. Appreciate the responses, I'll probably make a trip this week myself and get clarification.

They don't deal with any kind of ewaste and probably don't want the hassle of disposing of it since it's not something they handle. Ewaste is not a big thing down here at all. There's one yard I've found that buys ewaste of any kind and they buy it under a category the titled "ewaste mix" and they pay 15cents a lb no matter what you bring them.

We had troubled at the Yard where our office is located once...The first trip in, the Manager was brought out to inspect our load, because we had a Trailer full of gutted cases. He approved us, once he saw we keep the PCB. The SAME DAY, we were back, and were stopped on the scale on the way in, we told them we were cleared. Then at the shred pile, we were told we couldn't unload anything with PLastic. I pointed to the pile where we'd unloaded an hour earlier, and explained the manager had OK'd it. We had to wait 20 minutes for the spotter to come off of break and tell his relief that everything had been cleared earlier that day...

They are just playing CYA...Them stopping him doesn't mean he did it wrong, just means they know you do it RIGHT!

My local yard pays .05 cents per pound whether its tv board or CPU board. They let me walk around the place so I can get ideas of what is coming in. They have 2 gaylords full of tv board and CPU board. I have been approaching scrappers in the late hours of the night at major hotspots for picking. When I offer to pay a better price for the CPUs, they get very excited and want my number right away. I haven't gotten a call from any one. It's very frustrating especially when I see them back at the yard cashing in CPUs.

When your talking cpu boards, are you referring to motherboards?? If so try offering your yard .50-1.00 lb for computer boards, might just get a new pickup point.

I'd love to do it but don't have the finances for all that. Only thing they get from me is low grade boards, power supplies without wires, brown board CD/floppy drives with the gold connectors removed. I tried offering better prices to people like Rollyrogers was saying and really get nothing.

I am sorry. CPU boards I do mean motherboards. I have tried to offer money to buy their boards but they won't sell. They said their not a retailer.

504 what if the cases were some how smashed flat, maybe they would give you less problems?

Where is this? I'm in Baton Rouge and looking for a place to sell E-waste. The local yards advertise that they take E-waste, but when I called them their response was "Well, we don't really pay for it, but we'll take it."

you are better off shipping the boards than taking .15 lb for whole towers. there are a lot of buyers in the buyers section and at least 2 will pay the sghipping and take it off what they owe you

I'm wondering where this yard that pays .15 for ewaste. would be worth it for me with low grade.

I'd be pulling the boards from the CD drives and getting the 2.00 a lb when you send in your m'boards.

I understand we'd be better off pulling the boards off and shipping to one our buyers on here, but I gotta admit I'm curious as well. Where is this yard located down here?
