Today a scrapper stopped by my jobsite (what not to do).

Today while working on a total house remodel a fellow scrapper stopped by. He had heard from the electrician that we were removing the furnace and water heater/boiler. It is a big old "octopus" furnace. Probably easy ton of cast. Its in the basement, but its in the middle of the room. Eight foot ceilings. Six feet from the steps. So a fairly easy smash and haul, and although we scrap also, this is a really tight time frame. Water heater/boiler is right next to the furnace.
So I say "Its all yours." He responds by saying "Great. When you guys get it out, set the pieces by the curb and give me a call. I'll come by and get it."
Up the stairs and out the door he went. Needless to say I was dumbfounded.
I know! Maybe we could load it in our trucks and drive it to the scrap yard for him and he could just stop by and grab the check. Man wouldn't that be nice.(satire)
So he lost out on the furnace and water heater/boiler.
Just had to relate this little story.
P.S It was all unhooked from ducting, gas and plumbing.

You or whomever is in charge should also be asking for a copy of his liability insurance if he comes on the property. He might of done you a favor by leaving...

I one time helped a buddy carry a furnace and a water heater out of a basement once. Boy was that a ruff one.

that's another good point too scrappy, or as Burly would say/already said. "scrap removal is free, demolition is not!"
but back to the OP, SDSCRAP, I think he was talking about a "partner" type thing? or was he, haha ; )

One day when I was scrapping on the side of the road.

A older guy walks by & stops & turns & looks at me.

And he said "You don't get your money by selling scrap metal, you earn it by getting the scrap metal in the first place." & turns & walks off.

I hadn't thought of that bear. I hope not. Never met the man before today. And I live in a town of ten thousand people. I know most of them.
I took it out tonight. The cast furnaces arent too bad with a good sledge. HVAC guys wanted in tommorow. I shoved the water heater/boiler off to the side. I'll pull it out in the morning.

I almost think he was being sarcastic SD, and guessing he didn't want it, the work, or the money very bad

He might have been sarcastic. I was tired and hoping he would take it. Sad when you are hoping someone will stop by and remove perfectly good scrap. I understand, and agree with the "scrap removal is free, demolition is not" theory. I get people (who know I scrap) all the time who want me to remove there chain link fence (concrete posts and all), or satellite dish, or clothes line posts, or old deep freezers, etc. for just the price of the metal. They "think" they are doing me a favor. Its not worth my time and there is huge potential for damage to property. This is a little different in my book. We have gutted this down to studs. The water heater/boiler probably has $100 in copper piping with it. Even with the depressed prices that the yards are paying, he probably would have walked away with $300-$500 cash.
Oh well. The furnace has been removed. Boiler we will haul out in the morning. We will get paid for it when we haul it in.

I always have a few questions I ask myself when contemplating a job...but what it boils down to, is the value of what I get going to be getting equal or greater then the wage I expect to make. In this case I would be grabbing my gloves and BFH and getting busy.

I got a deal for you. You haul it, bring me the check (in my name) and I'll save you the trouble of cashing it. It would cost me a stamp to mail since I live 35 miles from the bank so please bring .42 with the check.
People may laugh at me, but that's ok. I laugh all the way to the bank.

Some people are too lazy for their own good. I've smashed a few boilers in my time and it's not hard work at all. I guess the guy is use to having stuff spoon fed to him.

If its such an easy "smash and haul" why didn't you pay a day laborer $100-$150 for the day to smash and remove it and load into your vehicle then?

Its strange but right now with harvest in full swing and everybody with a drivers license working in the oil fields its tough to find help. I think our unemployment is like 3.75%.
