how do you know what gauge of wire is no1 i know its gotta be bigger then a #2 pencil lead but i was just wanting the gauge numbers i know 10 is bigger but what about 12 and 14 i think 14 gauge is common house wire but is it #1? im talking about the core wire the good stuff.

It will also depend on your yard, some say 12 ga and others say 14 ga for #1

I never look for numbers, but go by sight. Numbers are usually hard to find anyway on old, worn, scuffed, or dirty wiring. It's easy enough just to look at the size. If a pencil's what they use, bust the wood off a number 2 and give the lead a good look.
Any questionable stuff in the pile, just ask when you get to the scale if it's all #1, but then I've got simple yards around here, where there isn't usually a line, and the scale master isn't in a platform office where you can't easily talk to him

thanks for the help. on another note why does it seem like the house wire is not as heavy as the no.2 wire or is it just me?

I do like Bear, but I'm blessed with no huge yards. My scale guy actually helps me unload, throw on the scale, mind you this is for things like copper, wire, etc. He doesn't help me unload shred or nothing..lol. Tho I've amazed him several times with what will fit in a mini-van. haha!
So take the words of wisdom from Bear an the other posters above, an combine that with Gino pointing you the search box...an ye shall find what ye seek.
