- Are electric motors worth anything?

I did a computer pickup today and the client asked if we take electric motors. There are residential and commercial garage door assembles so there is some metal there too.
They are currently throwing them in the dumpster, said they get 20-30 a month.
Are these worth taking for free? is there a resell value the way they are or do they have to be dissembled first?

.10 cents a pound here but check your local yard. I would make sure the wire inside is copper before you break any down.

Yes, they are worth taking. No, they don't have to be disassembled. But they're worth more if you do. I've got several hundred pounds of electric motors waiting to be torn down.
People may laugh at me, but that's ok. I laugh all the way to the bank.

Bigger motors 3/4HP and up have resale value depending on type/manufacturer etc.......

garage door motor units are worth $30 if they work, $50 if the work and have the track attached, all day long on craigslist

My local (NE Kansas) yard takes them as-is for $0.15/lb (as well as computer power-sources and cooling fans). You can break them down and get more money for the windings, but some are easier than others and check to make sure the windings aren't copper-coated aluminum, first....

I was thinking about these electric motors in bulk atleast the ones big enough to strip the copper out of.. Ive been doing just electric motors for about 2 weeks now so ive gotten pretty efficient at removing the copper. Ive heard both sides of the story about the steel cores being worth more then shred then I also heard they weren't. any clarity?

to me, they aren't worth breaking down. If you have large motors then maybe. I have crunched numbers after ripping them down manually. I suggest you do the same. Just remember to do your math correctly... Break some down run your numbers and post them. You will be surprised that your math is more than likely going to be wrong and your profit margin is going to be less than you thought.

Naturally .20 a pound for motors . will you have time to dissemble probably not. But thats easy money to take in as is .
Don't over look the chain track some are Aluminum some not . Short steel for the chain .

Heres a story -
each day I go to the yard I stop by a restaurant I know of.
I grab 35 gallon size bags full of cans . that had corn , potatoes , tomato's ECT.. you know giant food cans ,
about 125 pounds a week some times more !! Week after week for the last 3 years . Do the math $1800 to $2000 in the last 3 years for cans ! !

.30- .35 here . and copper head I do the same thing, theres a pizza restaurant by me and they don't recycle. those cans are heavy and add up.
