UPDATE: New ScrapYard in Kannapolis NC

I told everyone I would keep the forum updated, we've been open about 3 weeks now..Business is slowly building, Yesterday was our busiest day so far with about $480 payed out. We have been profiting decently on Steel because of our decision to not get a rolloff as they only were paying .5 cents more a lb. then driving it over the scales.
I Turned in some NON ferrous this week and got a check for around 700 which wasn't bad considering when I cashed it in that covered what I had laid out up until that part and the majority of the purchases til that part were about 70 percent Steel.

Ive been tearing down all the items we get in such as electric motors, computers etc. trying to squeeze every penny of profit out of everything I can.

Next week we are putting the Business fully in my Name so its def. exciting to see where we grow from here..

Ive been getting pretty good with the Local yards and several are stand offish but that's expected as Im COMPETITION. A few guys have kind of taken me under their wing and offered guidance, or advice whenever I need it.

Ive been separating out all the items we can sell for more then scrap such as Mowers, outdoor equipment, bikes, etc...and have turned a decent profit from selling those so far..

Long story short, So far so good..We are now stock piling for the surge in prices winter sometimes brings..so far we are plus .25-30 a lb on our Aluminum over what we paid for it..

Good luck it will happen, when I open my yard in the beginning we were very slow 6-10 customers a day, that was six years ago,I sold out to my partner three years ago today they average 450 customers a day,and he now has opened two more yards for a total of three. I would tell you to watch out for your competition they might tell you one thing and do the other, another thing I would tell you to do is go on recycleinme it's a website that puts buyers and sellers world wide together,I would try to book orders for most of your material thru that site,I would not sell anything to the yards around you unless you have to,as far a braking down things, use your time to get customers into your yard, hire some one to do the braking down, you have to learn to work with your mind and not your back when you have a yard your money is made thru the connections you make, not cleaning a electric motor, just my two cents.best of luck happy days are coming.

Thanks Guys for all the HELPFUL Insight so far..I just got a HUGE phonecall tonight. I have been talking with a Couple that had some old computers for sale about a year ago and the boyfriend was just not in the mood to sell his stash of computers and parts... I would periodically send her a message letting her know I was still interested in the computer junk and I would even pay them for the old units.. Well three days ago I sent another one of these messages and tonight I get a phonecall The boyfriend is ready to sell ALL his equipment because they want to Paint and clean up the house.

I also do Painting & Remodeling work so I may be able to barter my labor for some of the cost of the materials.

This guy is the local go to guy for parts for any types of computers in the area, He is said to have even his master bedroom floor to ceiling with towers and computer parts.. He has three guys showing up just to help tomorrow so I will definitely post pictures as I get the first load. I let him know it would be less money but I could pickup the LOAD so he wouldn't have to drive it the 25 miles to my shop.
I am excited as this is my first BIG haul close to this size from one source.. I just don't have a scale That I can take from the shop so I have to make sure I only put a few dollars max into each Tower. I had messaged her around .20 lb for full towers so I think that's a fair price.. I am checking the local buyer tomorrow am to make sure the prices are doing ok vs Online buyers..

1956-That is great news, I am getting the company into my Name next week so I would like nothing more than to build this yard from the Ground up..I def. don't mind doing the work and putting in the time, Ive got two little girls and a wife I work over 57 hours a week to Support..

I have put my own Painting business on the Back burner to Pursue the Yard Fulltime M-sat. 8-5
We are now the ONLY local yard to be open AT ALL on Saturday, as they are cutting their hours im extending ours in hopes itll draw in the extra business...

Ok stay focused,I do not know manny yards that concentrate on e-waste may be in your area that might be your Nitch, One thing I do know is that what ever direction you go,,remember volume is the secret to getting higher prices.

Yes Ive been on the phone constantly, I am doing the E Waste as a Way on Cashflow while we are building the yards volume..Its slow going now but its steadily increasing. I have talked to the yards and have chosen Omni Metals in charlotte to sell our Ferrous and Nonferrous, They have the best prices since they ship direct to the ports. Currently paying us over $2.00 extra per 100 lbs then every other yard.

I have been a hustler my whole life, Always the Entrepaneur I look at a lot of different items and try to visualize how to make money from it!

I will update tomorrow hopefully my warehouse will be full of Towers and parts

Im so excited about the HAUL I cant lay down to sleep, I will have to try to contain my smile as im loading them up.
