I have not scrapped many auto parts, but from what i have scrapped it sounds like you would be lucky to break even.

I dont even like paying 175 for whole cars lol really though i pay 200-250 for complete cars. sounds like hes tryin to get better than scrap off you. I wouldnt do it. I wouldnt even pay him 100 bucks. I wouldnt pay for anything. My time, effort and fuel is all that scraps worth to me.

And unless the parts are usable and off newer cars, resale can be tough.
If I didn't have bad luck, I'd have no luck at all...

A lot of people think scrap is gold. They hear about prices paid and don't realize what it takes to get it to the scale. I'd offer to clean up for the guy and give him a case of beer or $20. Or offer him a 10-15% cut on the load. Gotta be something in it for him but you're looking at doing all the hard work.

Ok hold on a second! The rotors avg 35 lbs=1400 the two motors if steel=600 so that's 2000 lbs here #1 Steel 225.00 a ton now here where it gets instresting, are the motors aluminum block and heads?.if so they are ironiery .22@lb??? Ok the rads how many are copper if any,??big difference copper rads now $1.40 a lbs,the pile of assorted is it starters, alternators,??may be some harness wire??
I don't know you did not say,so the thing is you have to know what's the value of the entire deal, it's easy to say pass the deal but I would have to say there are some things that were left out of your post. The shop wants 175.00 where did they get that number from out of there asssssssss?not likely.I am not saying that this is a good deal or not, but if you are asking you don't know.the only real way to learn is from your mistakes. I would say to take a shot at it wow much can you lose? You might get an education, I do buy all scrap from shops except there tin/ shread we get that for nothing.I make good money from auto shops scrap, and like I have said iN the past they always have scrap, you need to have a steady flow of material to serrvive in this game. Good luck happy scraping.

35lbs average for each rotor? I just sent in a bin of 450+ rotors a month or so ago. Averaged 12-15lbs per rotor. Depends on the vehicle. If they are off trucks/duallys then yeah id say 30+lbs but if its off cars like hondas or other small/midsize cars id say 12-20 lbs. Rear rotors are real thin now adays. So lets give him the benefit of the doubt and say they are all 20lbs each average, here cast is 240/ton. Each rotor at 20lbs is $2.40 x 40 is just under 100. Thats on the high end IMO.

Then the motors, if they are all cast iron then thats just shred at 200/ton. Again depends on the vehicle. Some 4cyl motors our mechanic can lift by himself. If its a 6 or an 8 then your probly lookin at 50-70 per motor. If they are complete. With Alum heads you will fair better but they take time to clean. Does sound like $$$$$ at first but its alot of work as well. I dont mind doing it at all, if i get it at the right price.

I agree im sure hes leaving stuff out. All depends on what the "other" parts are. If they are starters, alt, batteries then it may be worth it. Our core buyer pays 5 bucks for starters and alt. 2.50 for ac comoressors and 10 for batteries. 25 bucks for blown trannys and motors. But if its just rotors, motors, a few rads and shred id maybe see if you can negotiate the price. 100-125 would be my number.

    Another thought

If you are trying for repeat business with this shop tell them that you'll scrap it out and split the total with him. He'll see that it's not worth as much as he thinks. By showing him your scale receipt, he'll see you're an honest guy to deal with. Tell him you will do all the legwork of separating and hauling, so that he does not have to do it himself. You may get more out of it down the road treating him as a "partner" than the next scrapper that just wants to low-ball him.
