    Worth upgrading computers to sell

As part of an auction I got a few HP xw4600 workstations with a core 2 duo running at 2.33, a 256 mb video card, and the monitors, mice, keyboards, ect. They came with the install disks (vista business) and they just need a hard drive and memory.

    http://h18000.www1.hp.com/products/q...a/12792_na.PDF

Keep in mind that the computers I already tore down covered the cost of the auction and I'm into the black about 400.00, so I'm not in a rush to move them (have 10 total, 3 up and running so far).

They use a sata hard drive and PC2 memory. Both are cheap. I could add a 80 gb hard drive and 2 gb of memory for just over 20.00.

These systems will support a quad core and up to 16gb of memory (as well as a bigger video card obviously).

Do you guys think it would be worth it to put the money in upgrading to a quad core and perhaps 6 or 8 gb of RAM before trying to sell or would I just be better off selling them as dual cores?

I might be able to sell them for more but it would cost me more to upgrade them. I would be willing to upgrade them if it ment they would sell faster.

    Any thoughts................

Leave the CPUs as they are, let someone else deal with that. I rarely, if ever, upgrade units that I get to resell. I just sell as-is with whatever they came with. I sold 10 older HP workstations with P4 3.6, 2gb ram for $400 a few days ago just to give you an idea.

You start to price yourself out of the market if you raise the price to much...........You can get a brand new desktop for around $400 at walmart.........Probably cheaper if you found one on sell........I would put the least possible into them however what will sell them quickly is 4gb memory.......I try to always put 4 gb into my desktops and they do pretty well....I would put 4gb and at at least 160gb hard drive into them and let em rip tater chip

Never put anything below 160gb...and really 250 gb if possible...people need that storage space these days...and for goodness sake...put win 7 on those w/ 2-4 gb of ram.

But as others have said...only do that if you have the equip lying around..here a used desktop is LUCKY to sell for $100 TOPS...with a lcd monitor.

The other option id tou cant sell whole is to sell the dual cores on ebay...someone will buy them for $10+ each generally...check recent sales

Maybe I'm just too optimistic. I kind of thought that a dual core with 2gigs of memory, a 256 mb video card, mouse, keyboard, and LCD monitor would at least get me 75.00.

The people who would want one would want a complete system (usually for a NETFLIX box or a spare or for the kids). It would be hard to sell anything these days with less then 4GB of RAM and 250GB of HD space, dual core of better, and even then $100 is about what most markets bare. Anything more then $100 and people start to look at laptops.

If you paid $10 for them you can flog them for $40 each on ebay or to a local reseller and make 4x your money with no headaches. Once you scroung the parts and do the install you have a bit of time in them and money, not worth it for most people.

Cheap hard drives....Pull them from dvrs and trashed xboxs that you get...just reformat and off you go...hard drives are hard drives pretty much...some.tivos used their own sized ones from western digital...but again doesnt matter...format and load windows.

Check with parttimescrapper. He is a buyer here that buys, tests and sells hard drives. He can give you a great straight up deal without the e-bay fees.

I took a crack at the refurbishing side. I may do it again, but it will be with higher grade computers. I started with 10 HP Pentium D computers that I got for $15 each. No hard drives and 1 gb of RAM. When these computers were pulled from service, they were all working and had 80gb hard drives and XP on them. I had a couple of hard drives laying around that were good already, but needed 8 more. I made a call and got them at a good price.

For this experiment, I decided to keep them as originally sold. We installed 80gb hard drives into each and loaded them with XP. They were offered for sale with power cord, keyboard and mouse. Since I have little experience with reloading an operating system, I took on a partner in the task. A local kid that is in college for computers that already refurbs computers for resale to pay his bills. He is someone that I have dealt with for a bit buying burned up boards and swapping working for non working parts, etc. He had the disks and know how to do these things fast. I had 4 stations set up in the garage, so we could do 4 at a time. It takes about an hour or so to get a machine up and running from scratch. he had a disk that contained all kinds of drivers that he could just pop in and it would detect and install everything after the OS was installed. That saved a bunch of time as well.

This type of machine does have some use. Someone looking for a cheap computer with no whistles, buzzers and bells for a child, or grandma and grandpa for e-mail and Skype, there are many reasons to have a less than recent version of a computer. There are lots of people that don't have a music library or download video that can still use these computers that have a fresh install with no bloatware or viruses.

Long story short, I know, too late, I still have 4 of these setting here and the price is now at $50 each. I am still seeing some interest in them, so the price will not go down anymore. We sold one or two at each price level as we came down in price to find the key price point.

When listing these type of units on Craig's list, don't be afraid to double list it. Once in the computers for sale section, and again in the barter section.

Our best turn over in this endeavor came from the listing in the barter section. A guy called and we chatted about what he had and we ended up trading a netbook of some sort that worked fine (sold on E-bay for about $100 (cleared $82 after all fees and shipping)), and a computer that had a problem. The problem with this computer was that the owner had tried to pull out the heat sink and clean it. When he did that, the heat sink compound pulled the chip out with it and when he tried to reinsert it, a couple of pins bent and he gave up on it. That second computer worked after we straightened out the pins and then it failed after a couple of days use. However, the CPU was still good as well as the 8gb of DDR3 RAM and the 1 terabyte hard drive.

So, you can make some decent money from older systems with things such as only 1gb of RAM, and an 80gb hard drive.

However, you will certainly make more from a system that has more RAM and a higher value hard drive.

As far as video cards go, in my opinion, a special video card does not mean as much to people as the RAM and hard drive numbers. One may be better off pulling a nice video card and selling separately, and letting the motherboard handle the video.

Sorry for the ramble. Hope some of this helps.

To piggyback on that...higher enf video cards are only needed for gaming machi es...otherwise modern mothboards have on board video and audio that work just fine for most....so finding a good video card is so.ething to sell separately.

Modern machines need at the minimum 2gb ram...really 4 as most people open run windows and then open outlook, word and have several browser windows open...so 4 to be comfortable....load win 7 as it is the best operating system with the lowest overhead as far as ram...sorry guys time to.move on from win xp. 120 and up hard drive, cd/dvd writer, keyboard and mouse and a 17" lcd monitor at a min...that is your base level computer...and you should be avle to put together for very little with parts you get in.

I loaded XP because that is what the machine was licensed for already.

    Worth upgrading computers to sell

the only problem that I could see is that xp support ends in april and boxes with xp will slowly stop selling if the general public goes on to their website. win 7 is the best way to go since most people have no clue of other os's. just my 2 cents

Oh, I agree. Windows 7 is better, but these machines did not have a license for that OS. I probably won't be messing with anymore XP machines. But the parts are still good for testing and selling.

Again all you really have to have is a valid win 7 license...say from another machine that comes I for recycli g that is hosed...you should be able to use it...might have to call ms when you load it to activate (just tell them you have to use that license on the new config sinceyour old one broke...that should work fine.

iTs technically illegal to swap a oem coa from a salvage machine to a good one. You can be sued and whatnot. Food for thought...
