potato hook
Throw some leather gloves on and jump in. Got to get dirty to get paid.
Ice pick attached to handle to move things and a grapple rod made for the physically challenged to reach into cabinets for grabbing the cans. They are made for wheel chair bound individuals and have a pull handle that closes the grapple when squeezed. They are only about 2 ft. long and made out of aluminum.

I have an aluminum extension pole with a hook on the end used for sailing. The guys have been told they get a beating if they take it out of my truck! Extends from three feet to about 6-1/2 feet.

Just a big stick from whatever tree is down nearby.

Take some steel pipe, normally need a few sections but make to your liking. Nail or screw it together at the end of one of the pipes put a screw hook in it and crush the end of the pipe.
I use my 36 inch wrecking bars hooked end. All else fails I jump in there and grab it. Mind I wear thick soled boots and wranglers don't go getting yourself poked
I went to home depot and bought a 3in. paint roller, you can buy the handle without the roller part, tape it to the end of a long pole and you have something to pull things out of dumpsters with.
I have tried a few things. My favorite is an old bow rake or dirt rake.
This looks like it could be pretty handy.

I know you said you need something to grab with, but this
Reminded me of two useful tools......one the circle magnets from a microwave fit nice on the end of a pole, and two, magnets in a sock make for easy cleanup after breakdown.........you just swing it across the floor then take the magnets out and drop the metal scraps and screws into your shred bin, that way they don't stick to the magnet.
