    How I strip wire

    Uploaded with ImageShack.us

I use a flaring tool which already has holes in it and I place a razor blade in between and tighten down the clamps. Then I put the flare tool base in the vise. Works really well and it's cheap and easy to get one. The wire in the picture was fairly decent size multiple twisted aluminum wire. Insulation was hard plastic.

Anyone know what grade that is? Thick aluminum wire that's twisted multi strand? Stripped of insulation it's about the thickness of a pencil.

Two yards by me one gives me extruded aluminum price the other old aluminum .50-.70lb depending on yard. Check with your yard for pricing and how they classify. This may apply only to bare wire but some aluminum wire was steel reinforced for overhead power lines. Yard classifies as ACSR and pays .25lb

My local yard, in ky,the one I deal with most often calls the alum wire with coating on it acsr and it is .20/lb. If it has steel strand in center then it is irony alum, .17/ lb. If clean of coating and no steel, then they pay extrusion price, .63/lb. Another yard is a little different. If it has coating and no steel, then its unclean, .45/lb. If it is clean of coating but has steel it is unclean, as long as it is cut into 3 foot or less, otherwise it is irony, .14/lb. If it is all clean, they give clean extrusion price, .61/lb. If u cut it into 4 foot or less, then they pay an extra 6 cents on the pound, making it .69/lb. The reason they pay extra for it being cut is because they place it in large boxes to ship. They have to cut it up to get it in those boxes flat to get the most in a box. They will pay u for cutting it up!!! Best advice I can tell u is call around to different yards and describe to them what u have, and get prices. Be sure u describe it, and not call it a certain name because sometimes different yards call the same thing different names. Hope this helps u a little and don't confuse u more than u already were. Good luck

Red, just wondering how u stripping wire using 2x and drywall screws. I use a utility knife, the old fashoned way, kinda slow, but I have gotton good. Can't really afford a stripper though (hopefully I can when I get my taxes back, but this year gonna be a low refund. Only made about 25000 year on scrappin'. Have not got all reciepts added up yet though).

If anyone else has any ideas for a homemade poorman wire stripper, id love to hear. Thanks

Use and old tire regroover! break of the round part at the bottom and use the upright. It takes about 10 mins. for it to warm up then just cut away.

This wire would be considered "EC wire" or Enamel Coated wire once stripped. It usually fetches a higher price than Aluminum Rims when sold . But everyone buys differently so I would say extrusion price is fair. I like this stripping method. As cold as it has been up here in Maine...I have just been slamming my wire on the ground and the plastic just shatters off haha.
