where is the best place around Houston to sell some Motor Generator Sets ?

I am looking to sell 3 MG sets that were used to power a Cray 1 supercomputer. They weigh about 7000 lbs each. I am wondering how much copper is in a unit which have a 156 KW alternator 400 cycle . There is a 3 phase 250 HP 60 cycle motor and also a 40 hp starter motor . I have 3 of these units. I have been trying to estimate how much copper is in each unit.

    Jim,
For this kind of heavy equipment you might try here. This is a website called the "surplus record", where they sell every kind of used industrial stuff. The website lists used equipment dealers and the equipment they have for sale.

I just looked on it and you can bring up a list of electrical suppliers geographically, by state. There are a bunch of suppliers(read used electrical equipment dealers) in Texas and hopefully you will find someone who will give you lots better than scrap for the units.

I would be surprised if anyone needs big 400 cycle alternators (I always thought it was nearly exclusively the military that used 400 cycle) but the 250 hp motors should have good resale value. That might work in your favor because I believe the alternators will have more copper in them than the motors, since they will have copper in the rotors.

Posting a photo sure would be appreciated!!

    Jon.
