Need help pricing a boat for scrap.

Hey guys. I have a woman who owns an apartment complex contact me about removing this boat she's had in her parking lot for about 10 years now. SHe thinks it's aluminum, but I haven't seen it yet, I'm going over there tomorrow, it's about 40-45 miles away. I'm sure the tires are shot, so I'll have to replace them. She also 3 washers and a fridge she wants gone. Figured I'd just find a way of tossing them into the boat.

Around here, alum breakage is 15 cents a pound, hoping with my sawzall and tools I can remove all the steel and get 45 cents a pound for clean alum. Appliance bring 8 cents a pound at a different yard in town. Thinking I might also keep the boat trailer and make a custom scrap trailer out of it. God knows I need one.

But I've never done anything quite like this before, and I'm wonder what's a good price to give for all this stuff. She also said that the guy who used to come buy and pick her dead appliances hasn't been round in a while, so I may have a reliable client if I play this right. And I'm supposed to go pick it up tomorrow.

    Suggestions?

I think you could sell the boat. Many people "think" they want a fix up boat! (Untill they have one!) I would not offer much, and if she did want alot for boat, I would then ask if she wants to still get rid of the appliances!

Sounds like she may be in a pinch. I'd offer 75-100 for boat/trailers (try to sell boat first, tis the season, should be able to get at least $250 based on pics) and maybe free pickup every time she has more than 3 appliances to junk. Would be handy if you could find a yard close to this place so you don't have to haul them that far and waste gas. However, for 2 hours of drive time, 1/2 hr. loading/strapping, and another 1/2-1 hr. of your time hauling to scrap yard calculate if its worth picking up her scrap. By the way, how will you recover gas from fridge? Do you have a guy or does your yard accept them charged?

Brother, if you get that for $100, I will be green with envy!!
2nd.....don't scrap it!!!! Especially if the motor comes with. Idk, maybe boat prices aren't the same down there, but up here people ask 3-400 for a 12-14 flat jon with no trailer or motor. Heck, I plopped $800 for a 16' semi v with trolling motor last year.....and that was a deal!!

I'm with hobo, someone wants a project boat.

Unless it has massive holes or cracked down the hull, never scrap a boat....unless aluminum prices reach monumental levels. And the motor, someone will want...working or not.

P.S. find out if it has a title, otherwise it could be difficult to retitle....and check on the rear of the boat for the I.d. #. And.....The real reason I'm responding again is to ask what you'll do about towing it without a valid license plate...especially if it's not titled? Trailer must be titled too....at least up here it is....and with functioning tail lights. CYA!!!

It has no title, and I'm sure the tags are out, been sitting ten years. The owner died and it's been sitting in the complex ever since. I would like to sell it, but I don't have much time to sit on it, gotta turn it around pretty quickly. I'm just going to take the back tag off my truck and put it on the trailer and take as many backroads as I can. Not seeing much of a choice.

DO NOT PUT YOUR TRUCK TAG ON THAT TRAILER. That's a crime way worse then no tag.
Just get a bill of sale from her, you have 10 days to tag the trailer.

I third what old dude said!!!! I've pulled a boat without a plate and taken back roads...would never advise it on a forum, but I would definitely NOT put your truck plate on it. The "tag" I'm referring to on the back should be riveted...basically a vin # for a boat. If you have that, it wouldn't be hard to title. Would require an officer to come out and run it before going to the Bureau...at least in IN.

    Laws vary
All depends on what State you are in
In Ma you have to have Insurance and then you get tags, which you can't do without a title
In Ma if you purchase a car, If you have disposed of your old one (NOT parked in your driveway BUT sold to someone else or squished) , you can attach the old plate to your new car and you have 7 days to transfer the Insurance and go to the RMV and transfer the tags
Not sure if it works the same with trailers
In Ma I would slap my trailer tag on it and good to go to drive it home

Most in this area take older trailers like that with no Title and Register as home made and get a title that way
I wouldn't put a Car or Truck plate on a trailer as you are just asking to get pulled over at that point
Trailer Tags in MA say Trailer on them

To register the boat and put it on the road (in the water) >> can't do in Ma without the title

I'll call the dmv and cops and see what they say. I just need to haul it from there to the house, and then maybe to the scrapper if she don't sell soon. Appreciate the advice guys. Still not sure how much to offer. I know 100 would be nice, and I'm hoping she'll take it. She mostly just wants it gone. She has money coming in from the apartment complex. This is mostly just an eyesore for her.

I'm not even sure 5 appliances would be worth driving 45 miles for. lets say he gets 5 washers or dryers, at steel price lets average them out to $8.00 a piece. $45.00 minus gas minus taxes minus cost of goods = maybe not worth it. Now, if she could guarantee him about 8 appliances he could stack them on his truck and maybe like you say, find a nearby yard to turn in to.

OP, is she giving you the appliances for free? I would also be careful about loading this into the boat. that might not be so safe.

I offered her half of what I get for the apps, which is 4 bucks. That far for only 4 apps, that's a break even scenario at best. The boat is what I'm going for. I figure between the truck and boat, the apps should fit safely enough.

Okay, here's the filthy capitalist pig chiming in once again.

I CHARGE to take boats away. You have to inflate or replace tires, have them find you the title if they can, get the title transferred, hook up magnetic lights because theirs never work, pull it out without getting stuck in the mud, drive it down the road without getting pulled over for no plate or taillights, and if you're scrapping it cut it into bite-size chunks your yard will take.

Then I take them to auction without bothering to try to sell myself.

No way would I pay for this.

And those other trailers will sell in a heartbeat at auction even as beat up as they are.
