    Buying scrap fork lifts

Just was looking at some scrap unwanted fork lifts in a auction, and thought this would be a good buying tip for scrapers that might find them selfs running into this or a similar situation. How much does it weigh and what is the scrap value???? Well a little tip I have learned a few years ago is quite easy to remember. If the fork lift is ratted at a five thousand pound lifting capacity, it will weigh just around 5000 pounds, a ten thousand pound lifting capacity will weigh around 10,000 lbs so if you are getting 200.00 a net ton for steel (just a money example) and it's got a 10,000 lbs capacity your looking a five tons @ 200.00 a ton = $1000.00 or about scrap value hope it helps. Happy Scraping

You do know scrap yards will devalue them because of the concrete that is used for weight, right? That being said the batteries on electrics are worth big bucks!

I have never heard of a concrete deduction, even when I had my yard, but they can and will deduct for rubber tires.

Funny you mentioned this in a thread.. was just talking to a guy the other day.. Be wary of putting a 10,000 lb on your dual axle 3,500 lb rated axle trailer- I've seen em bend them up real easy!

I drove fork lifts at two different factories (some outside) and none of those had concrete in them that I know of.
They all had that huge chunk of iron hanging on the back, unless they were electric, then they had the huge battery.

Most forklifts weigh 1.5 to 2 times their rated lifting capacity.

Well I beg to differ with that calculation, got a question for you. How hoes something that weighs 5,000 lbs pick up something and move around with 10,000 lbs, I think your calculation defies gravity.

ive dealt with 3 or 4 fork lifts and 1 small cherry picker, it has been a long time ago but i remember that my yard actually told me they would pay me more for the weight if i seperated from the machine....so at least with the ones i had i would assume the counter weights were steel or cast iron...
