Make the most of your trip to the scrap yard, dump, ect. (networking & more)

    Hello,

In this thread I wanted to talk about making the most of your trip to the scrap yard, dump and other drop off locations. I used to go to these places just to drop off my load of stuff but, now I think of it as an opportunity to do many things. I always try to talk to the people next to me who are dumping, you can meet new clients, buyer, workers, and more. Here are my goals when I go to drop stuff off:

    -Drop off the load
-Networking- I have found buyers and workers at drop off sites. I found a liquidation company that bought 20 broken appliances from me at $35 each, whom I still do business with.
-Clients - You can meet clients at the dump who need more stuff hauled away.
-Buy stuff from scrap yard- When you go to the scrap yard and see something that you need they will sell it to you. For example, if you need a certain type of metal to build a trailer that you see in the metal pile they will sell it to you, my scrap yard will sell it for 3x what they buy it for. Or when you go to the e-waste yard and they have something that you want, ask them how much they would sell it to you for.

The key is talking to your neighbor at the drop off site and even offer to help them unload if it looks like they need help. Just a couple of days ago I was at the e-waste recycler and the guy next to me was trying to unload a big 300 lb. office printer with another guy. I started to talk to them and then I helped them unload the printer. The guy said thanks and later told the worker at they facility to give the ewaste payment to me. They just wanted to get rid of the stuff and didnt mind giving me the payment because I helped them. It was only like $15 but, It only took 1 min. of work. As for picking up stuff and buying stuff at the site, that is just fun. I hope someone else here at the forum can find this handy.
