Gas Pumps

Got a guy wanting to sell me two gas pumps. Never dealt with one before, but he says it's heavy, probably a few hundred pounds each. I know it has to have some electronics in it, but I'm not sure what or how much. Also, he says they are still operational. Does anyone have any ideas where one goes about selling some used and working gas pumps, lol?

I dunno, but I'd expect for find some 'white bronze' in them.

I know they can be sold to farmers and people who fuel up airplanes in remotish places.
The farmers need to know how much fuel they use and pilots need to know how much fuel there is in the plane...

I know of someone who has several, I think they scrap them.
I have talked to his coworker who fixes electronic cash registers and EFTPOS systems, I get his escrap.
He told me about the airplane useage.

There's gotta be firms who service the gas pumps at the gas stations! Google or the phone book might be your friend here.

Don't bank on them being newer enough to having electronics in them. There's still the old mechanical ones kicking around, presumably from places like Armpit, Nebraska.

We even had a gas pump repair firm in the small town I worked at. They had tons of used pumps in stock...we had all mechanical pumps at the plant sites and they kept them working for years.

To add on to what Jon/saw said...You could also try word of mouth to local independent stations near you, or if your in the country mom an pops that have not upgraded. If not in the country but country near by, sounds like a good day trip. Hop in your ride an hit the back roads looking for older stations that could use an upgrade.

Ebay, an CL if their old enough someone might collect them, or again as Jon said..could try farmers an folk of that ilk. Tow companies come to mind that have fuel in their yard. Car dealers..like the small ones might need a new one. Just ideas. Better then going..."I got nothing!".

Don't over look the simple avenues, you might be surprised what can sell in places you would think normally wouldn't be good for such things.

Ok, here's my experience with gas pumps. I have one from the 70's (Union 76) on my farm tank. It is old enough that it's got a separate motor and pump so that there is a belt running from the motor to the pump to power it. That's the type that farmers (or pilots) can use.

The ones from the 80's and 90's that I've scrapped (my stepdad had a station then) were mechanical with the motor integrated into a kind of pump like housing. You can't even get electric motor price for this because it has so much extra cast iron. These won't work for farms either because the actual pump is down in the tank attached to the sump pipe. The register head where the numbers are will most likely be cast aluminum with some aluminum gears in it. Dirty aluminum. You have a tiny bit of wiring going to the lights and motor. Nothing else has power to it because it's all mechanical. The nozzle and place to hang it will be aluminum, but there again, dirty. Anything looking stainless is probably magnetic. It's only there for show so they didn't need to use nonmagnetic stainless. The hose connectors can be aluminum or brass, still dirty unless you can get all the hose out of them. They are probably right about the weight. Those things are heavy, but I wouldn't pay more than I'd pay on straight steel.

I haven't scrapped a digital one but I'm sure there a few boards in them. I doubt there are any high grade because the computer systems for the pumps are inside the store. On second thought, if it has a credit card acceptor, it probably has some higher grade boards.
