I answered a craigslist ad on Sunday for a scrap water heater to be picked up, and made arangements to pick it up Monday after work. I was going to be a little late, so I called them to let them know, and they said they appreciated the heads up. When I got there, I was very courteous and it was "yes, sir" and "yes,ma'am". One point every scrapper needs to remember, when picking up scrap and your about to conclude your business, ALWAYS ask that they keep your phone number and that they keep you in mind if they ever have anything else they need to get rid of OR if they hear of someone who has stuff they want to get rid of. Tuesday these same folks visited a friend of theirs who has a antique mall business, and they mentioned this nice, courteous fella who got a piece of junk water heater out of their way. This friend of theirs asked if he would be interested in an A/C unit. They called me back, I said I would be, and they gave me the name of the business owner. I called her, again being polite, and went to her place with my truck expecting a window unit. No, it was an old 3 ton Carrier central A/C unit (already disconnected). VERY HEAVY. Had a friend meet me yesterday afternoon and we got it wrestled onto my flatbed trailer. CHA-CHING. Bottom line is, ALWAYS ask for the folks to keep your number (or give them a business card if you have one), and always ask to be referred if they hear of someone who has junk they want to get rid of. If you are polite, it WILL leave a good lasting impression. This is not the first referral I have gotten, and hopefully will not be the last.
