how they recycle insulated wire
The history of this forum has been burning of anything, including insulated wire, is very much condemed. I recall 10+ years ago a salvageyard in a small city near by would burn wire at the yard. Today they would be arrested for it.
I realise you asked a question and was not recommending someone burn insulated wire. Mike
Very good incite from the inside. Welcome aboard, from Florida.
MR,
I don't see stripped wire or low grade to this company, only Romex, THHN, alarm, Tin-C and Steel-BX. I get better prices on everything else at other yards. This company only buys what was on that list. They are actually a sister company to an electronic recycling company.
All the old scrappers in my area tell story's of burning piles of wire at the town Incinerator, what is now a transfer station. Was not to bad burning a little wire insulation next to the furnace that burned everything that the town threw away.
As a kid I remember every Thursday if the wind was to the north the whole town would stink...
Back then local manufacturers also dumped truckloads of copper and brass into the metal pile... also no more
I talked to the owner of the yard i frequent about how he wanted his insulated wire separated, he gave me three categories, I asked about percentages.. with a smile he said you know a lot more than most people coming in, who is teaching you? The best in the biz i replied.. to which i got a hrmpph and a laugh... if he only knew:)
My dad works in the restoration business from water/fire ect. So I get quite a bit of burnt wire from jobs and some is badly burnt some is just smoke damaged but my yard will buy it like that, I don't bother stripping it when it's melted up like that. **starts building wire processing plant In basement**
Great insight thanks for the tip
