Cool So what are you doing with your floppy's ??????

So the big question i have is floppy"s, what works for you, do you just pull the boards and scrap the rest,
do you pull the gold connectors, can not see paying some one to strip them, any one selling them hole?
Got lots of flopply's just trying to find out what works the best.
Looked up some old threads every one has a different story.

There is no good answer to this other than do what makes the most sense (cents) to you. This question is best answered by the numbers rather than opinions... ironically this is my opinion

If you don't do anything else, pop off the gold connector end and you could chuck the rest into shred. The ends don't take up much room.

I pluck the board, an the little motor do hickey(I got it down to a science, takes no time) rest goes to shred.

If I'm being lazy, I just break the gold connector off an toss the rest in shred. 85% of the time I break them open, but again for me it takes no time. It's busy work for when I got a slow day, a lazy day, or a rainy day.

    As always YMMV.

Straight into the shred pile, whole for me. The boards are so light they're not worth messing with if there's anything at all to do otherwise.

If you ship to someone that pays a decent amount for them, calculate if shipping that extra weight would save you shipping costs overall.

So what are you doing with your floppy's ??????

I sell them whole as the price of the board ends up being the same price for me.

i pull most boards but tend to leave the floppy boards
goes straight to my shred/sub grade pile

if i was living in the US, near to one of the big ewaste buyers here, then it would make sense to pull those boards as well.

I know I always push this, but everyone needs to do a cost/benefit analysis on things like this, so they can see how much of their precious time they are wasting.

It's not wasting time if you want to break down floppys. Some of us do this as a hobby and are not concerned about a cost/benefit analysis. Hell I use to collect seed from an endangered coneflower I grow and spend endless hours separating the chaff from the seed so I could package them up and give them away. I enjoyed doing it.

    Bingo!

You're looking at a few cents difference on a load. Just do what's quickest.

For me, the whole thing goes as shred. Unless, I keep the drive.

Because, you know, I still use floppies.

I pop off the gold connector with a flat head screwdriver. I don't even remove it from the computer mount.

They are lo grade brown boards with out the pins. Not worth the time in my opinion.

    Question:
Some floppy drives have green boards with IDE connection, They look like HDD boards or CD rom boards. I see about 1 out of every 20 floppy drives i find. Do these go for the same price as CD rom boards?

I always pop them out and grab the motor myself. Don't they go in with Devalued Finger Boards?

Once again I do it the way I do on down days. So that whole time thing is out the window for me. It's either do it in my down time or do nothing. I prefer to do that.

I pull my boards only so it's easier on me to get the motor an goldpin section.

I live on a sandbar, all I got is time.

If someone is happy making money breaking things down, then...more power to them I say. There is no perfect way to scrap. We all have things we do in our own way. This is one of those things. I do it in downtime when I have nothing else to do. I also break off the CBM's on my tv' boards in my downtime. It's time that I would normally would be making nothing, so..yea..I do what I do.

This is why I say...YMMV when it comes down to a breakdown process or if it's worth it on some items.

It's your time to spend, only you can determine if it was well spent.

Well fella"s this is not a hobby for me it is by business, and i personally do not break much of any thing down anymore!!!! So the answer is right into the shread its not cost effective to pay some one to strip the boards out thats what makes (cents) to me.

It takes about 10 seconds to rip off the connector, then toss in a bucket. I wish I had all those connectors you guys have thrown in the shred pile.

    56,

I am a business to, a one man one. Your much larger don't get me wrong. I also don't do the other stuff you do, nothing but ewaste. If people are throwing thousands or hundreds of floppies at you you might want to check into gold connector prices. Like Mech said above it takes 5 seconds. You can break them off without even taking the case apart.

You asked for opinions, you got them. Not all of us are so big we just throw things in shred. I dislike just tossing things into the shred pile. That's throwing away money for me. An I dislike giving any yard free money.

Sirscrapalot - YMMV regardless if your business or a hobbyist.

This made me wonder exactly how much weight just breaking off the connector and pulling the easy motor would yield.

You'll need 40 drives to get a pound of motors.

You'll need 90 drives to get a pound of connectors.

If it takes 15 seconds to deal with each drive on average counting any other time associated with this, with 90 drives you will spend 22.5 minutes. The yield will be a bit over 2 lbs of motors, and one pound of connectors. So, say about 50 cents of motors, and 25 to 50 cents for the connectors if you count shipping cost to get that money.

Nice busy work though. Not hard to do.

Edit - Also forgot to add in that you have to subtract what you would get for shred. So take away 3 lbs of shred for those 90 drives.
