not all of us are so big we just throw things in shred. I dislike just tossing things into the shred pile. That's throwing away money for me. An i dislike giving any yard free money.

sirscrapalot, you make vaild points, and have much more experience in e-waste than i do, i am always trying to figure the most efficient way to run my business you try something one way and see how it works, the thing that i have come to understand about e-scrap is the profit margins are not so profitable on certain items and floppy's fall in to this category, i have figured out that i make more money with the floppy's by putting them in the shread than paying one of my guys to scrap them out.

If it takes 15 seconds to deal with each drive on average counting any other time associated with this, with 90 drives you will spend 22.5 minutes.

I do this at nite while surfing around here so that 22.5 means nothing to me. If I wasn't doing that then I'd be eating or drinking too much as I don't drink beer no more. Doc said that was a no-no with all the touchy heart medicine I'm on.

This is just what I do, you can do what you need to, to keep on top of it.

Hmmm, well, this is what I do, I take all of My floppy drives and toss them into a gaylord, when filled, I ship out with the rest of my goods, the floppy drives almost pays for a trailer pup size, double stacked, That is the best way I do it.

and yes I'm still around.. been way to busy working and not enough social time, but I do peek in now and then.

I am able to drive them into ewasted and get better than shred. Very grateful for that.

I do pull the cast aluminum ones aside and break those down. you may find those to be worth it.

It's all good buddy, hence my whole YMMV.

I realize what works for me as a one man army, may not work for you big dogs with staff an all that. Like Mech I do these kind of things when I got nothing to do, slow, or just in my spare time while doing something else.

Like tonight..Gotta do some stuff on the computer that'll take a bit, so while things are downloading, I'll kick on the tv here in my office, find something entertaining, grab a tote of something from my "I got nothing better to do, so I'll break these down" pile. LOL.

Interesting to see what everyone does with their stuff tho! I don't think I've ever gotten a cast alum floppy drive. Or if I did I didn't pay attention an threw it in the shred pile.

The top lid is still tin but the main part is diecast and they'll be some brass inserts for swivel points. I usually see about 1 in 8 -9.

They are lo grade brown boards with out the pins. Not worth the time in my opinion.

Question:
Some floppy drives have green boards with IDE connection, They look like HDD boards or CD rom boards. I see about 1 out of every 20 floppy drives i find. Do these go for the same price as CD rom boards?

I think you are referring to zip drives.

Like this one (not my auction) they have the same 50 pin IDE connector and the board looks just like a harddrive board too.

Here is how I assess/process 3.5" floppies. First, with drive still in tower, are pins gold plated the entire length or tips only? Tips only, I used to use flat screw driver to break off (still in tower) and add with gold connectors (no longer economical with shipping). Full length plated pins, same removal procedure. 3.5" floppies were made when gold was less expensive and used in greater quantities. Full length plated pins are then hit with air chisel to break up remaining circuit board fiber. Pins are then extracted and soldered ends removed. Remaining base metal pins with gold plating are then processed to remove the base metals or remove the gold (aka topic for another forum). This has been a multi-year experiment and gold will not be sold for 20-40 years if at all. What is the return? I won't know for awhile. I just try to spend time on materials that seem to have the best potential with least storage over my time range.

As ewasted and others said it's only a matter of, " is it worth it to me"? And always be willing to adjust to new circumstances. I use to break down printers. Now I get so many I sell whole to yard as white goods.

My yard is only .05 lb and they buy all electronics at that price (minus tv's & monitors). Their making out buying computers & parts at .05 lb.

Yes that is what they are. Thanks. Ive been saving the boards, I figure I can get CD rom price for them. I haven't seen anything on buyers pages about Zip drives though.

That's the same setup we have here. Any electronics are $0.05 per pound, except CRTs and TVs. They charge $0.50 per pound for those.

Our yard does pay more for some items (such as RAM), but their prices are pretty low.

I put all floppies, CD, DVD, ZIP, whatever drives in a tub and sell them whole. Same with my HD's, goes into a unique bin with no processing. I got into an argument with a guy at the yard about the time vs commodity benefit of dismantling HDs. I have never found it in my interested to break anything down more than I have to and then break it down more (IE. DePop a board, trimming fingers) I can break down a Pc in about 3 mins and file everything into bins. The time to additionally process IMO outweights the gains. Sure, Gold connectors are worth more per pound, but its going to take a lot to get to that weight and when you break it down, you get about the same leaving it whole. Criticize if you'd like, I'm anxious to hear if anyone makes way more money for the work.

it all depends on the amount of product you have. If you don't have product coming in you might as well spend the time making more from what you have. HDDs are tricky for me because some with smaller boards I will get less for selling them separately.

Now for the spinicism: I throw all my floppy & optical drives in a box and send them in when I send a larger load of circuit boards. They would not be worth shipping by themselves. I won't put plastics or anything with circuit boards in the shred pile: We promise to keep the waste stream clean.

honestly, if you are paying yourself to do it and were doing nothing with the time anyway, it's worth it. If you have to pay someone else a wage, you're holding a red pen. That's the reality of it. It's a very low profit increase and if you're paying out to get it, you're losing money.
