Probably a newbie question to you guys but is there any value in scrapping flyback transformers? I've been saving em for a couple yrs and got about 50 or 60 in a pile but wasn't sure if they're worth anything. Thanks

Hi Jon,
I took them off as well and used the shear at work to break one open, they have a small ring of copper in them, not as much as I thought they would, mostly fluff filling as I called it. I no longer remove them from the boards because my yard pays the same price for each item.

I throw them in with other transformers and motors, my yard buys them that way.

Like Mech an Hobo, mine go with motors/transformers.

Took them to the yard today and they told me they only pay sheet steel prices for them. Disappointment lol. Might have to look into ebaying them for now on

Ask the manager about it. Maybe the scale guys don't know any better.
Try another yard, if there is one.
Or, go fishing.

Lol, yea gonna ask mgr next time I go. I got $3.12 for 40lbs of them at the price they gave me today. Wishing I would've just kept them instead of selling at that rate. Live and learn though I guess

Think it's time to shop around at other yards in the area too. Been going to the same place for 5yrs but still get a feeling they're robbing me somehow more than half the time I go, even after being loyal to them that long

Flyback transformers, specifically the sorta of "c" shaped piece of metal that goes from the top, down the side and into the bottom. What's it called? anyone know? Just a observation, most of the ones I have found to be 300 series stainless steel. I have found some to be just regular steel. Every once in awhile I find them to be brass and even copper. Sometimes the transformers have no metal rod attached. What is this piece of metals purpose in life? Anyone? A curious mind wants to know!

Went to my copper yard with two 5 gallon buckets of flyback and other small transformers. Both buckets were mixed with the flybacks and they were only going to pay light steel. So took both buckets back and will now separate the two types of transformers. Now will need to find a yard that will pay better then shred for the flybacks! For now going to look at it as a "positive", maybe I will find a better yard.

NEW TO SCRAPPING? READ THIS: Build up your horde of magnetic and non-magnetic metals in two piles until you have a better understanding of the business. Magnetic material has low value and is mostly always steel / shred / short iron. Read old threads about non-magnetic metals and ewaste (and how to sort them), but don't forget that they generally have absolutely no tolerance for contamination (screw / iron / foreign material).
