Keeping track of pounds recycled per year.

Do you guys and gals keep track of how many lbs of scrap you recycle throughout the year?

At the end of the year we always call the yard we sell to and ask them for our totals for the year. How much we made and how many lbs we brought in for various things.

It adds up, if you're not sure how much you're actually recycling poundage wise rather than actual money, the numbers can be pretty startling especially for steel since it's the most common. It adds up quick, next thing you know you look back and realize you've recycled a few hundred thousand pounds and say wow.

I wish prices were a little higher this year, seems to have been a lower paying year compared to previous ones.

If I did the math right, 100,000 lbs of scrap, worth $150 per ton only amounts to around $7,000. But to even look back and think you were responsible for scrapping 100,000 lbs of metal, it gives you a different perspective on it all.

Let's make some new years resolutions and see how much scrap we can really recycle in 2015.

I put mine in a spreadsheet right after I bring the ticket/'s home. That way I don't have to check with the yards (3 of them) for totals.
I also enter what I got where so I can look back and see who had the better prices on such and such a day. If I wanted to I could also add gas bought and other expenses.

That just got me thinking about those new 'print to text" scanners or whatever they're called. You scan your receipts and it actually pulls the data onto your computer as editable text.

Wouldn't it be nice to just scan your tickets and have everything categorized and filed automatically.

i keep all of my receipts and also track on a spreadsheet. I do it more out of curiosity as technically I am not running a business. when i total mine up, i am surprised to, it adds up quick.

I also use a spreadsheet, simple. I added a mileage sheet and and expenses sheet to track how much I spend and just try to makes sure Im all in the green. But it also helps let me know how much Im spending on tools. I tried to attach a blank copy but failed. I might be able to pm it to anyone who would like a copy.

I also use a spread sheet I track hours worked and what I was doing, what items I picked up, load totals. Breaks down to hourly rate. For 2015 im adding mileage and tool purchases.

I also keep an excel spreadsheet, both for weights and dollar amounts. I put in what I bought or sold, where, when and for how much. I also enter in my expenses, so I can see how much profit I made. I start a new sheet each year, so I can compare how I am doing, compared to the previous year.

Track wt. and payout on excel. Use Quicken to track expenses. Analyzing the profit verses expenses and hours became disappointing. Still track both, but do not analyze the data. Keeping out of trouble, staying busy, and enjoying life is more important than an accountants view of the business.

Just another point of view, if this is your only source of income you will suffer from stress, high blood pressure, and health care expenses beyond the value of the scrap. At the same time, I would not change this lifestyle.

As far as the goal for next year, 80 tons.

I haven't kept track, but I plan to start a spreadsheet in 2015 to start keeping track. I only have rough guesses of what I took in this year, like 6 tons of shred, 400 pounds of aluminum, 300 pounds of batteries, 300 pounds CBM, 100 pounds transformers. Not much but got me some decent money. Oh and 1 pound of ballasts

I think it was Auminer who posted a couple of shots of his excel spreadsheet, if anyone needed a visual aid to assist them.

I forget the thread, but I'm sure a search on "Spreadsheets" will bring it up.

I'd magic up the link, but that's Mech's gimmick, mine is quotes an being awesome.

I will occationally be breaking something down and wonder if it is worth it. I have come to an understanding that works for me. This is done at times I am not "working" and I am just burning some idle time. I listen to the radio, fart around with the computer, drink beer, break down scrap. Beats the hell out of asking one person after another if they would like fries with that. It is not glamorous, but I get to drink my beer while I work.
