making a wire stripper - Page 2

I made a very good stripper very cheap. Take a piece of 2X3 and drill a hole in it the diameter of the wire, then take a wood screw and screw it it in from the top of the board so the point sticks into the hole.



To use it, unscrew the the screw and put the wire in until you can grab it with a pair of pliers, screw the screw back in so it just pierces the coating of the wire and pull the wire thru, The screw will cut the coating and when you set it right you can pull the wire right out with no trouble. Clamping the block into a vise will make it even easier.

It may not be powered, but it works well and its very cheap and quick to make.

Great idea sounds like it will work to me. Going to make one tomorrow and see how it turns out.

Somethin tells me theirs 3 new members here that work for the same wire strippin' company.....

My wife worked at a power cord factory and said they had a stripper with a pedal...if I had only known her back then..; )

I looked at the vid on the website. I've worked for a wire manufacturing company many years ago. We used to pull the scrap wire through the blade portion by wrapping it on a drum and the motor was attached to the drum. As the drum turned the wire was pulled through the blade.

It looks like you could find a rubber roller with a v in it and get a pipe cutter wheel and assemble them in a in a press fashion. Turn the roller and feed your wire and strip.

Thank you for the link, and the price isn't too bad. We're gonna try a Rigid pipe cutter wheel sold by Fastenol (they carry a couple of different sizes) on top and a small v pulley from a lawn mower and a foot switch from a sewing machine(just happen to have a couple ready to scrap). I'm also gonna check a small paper shredder and see what the bottom half is made of( I know there's cutter wheels in there on top). First we build it to work, then we rebuild it to last, cheaply.

i made one that works pretty well. took me 6 hours but it was worth it. stripped a 5 gallon bucket full in 2 hours. 12 lbs of wire. need to make a new one with some improvements though. if the blade is new i can even strip the little ones. made outta mostly wood. got a v-track down the middle and and adjustable blade for different size wire. just strip the end, set the blade, and pull it through with a pair of pliers. definitely saved me alot of time.

I don't have a digital camera to take a picture. Not even sure I'd know how to use it if I did. I'll try to find someone who's got one that can walk me through it. I'm not too technologically inclined. There are flaws with it though. the wood wears out fast if you do alot of wire and I need to redesign it to have less blade sticking out so it doesn't bend from center and have the wire roll off to the side. Plus the wire likes to roll anyway. Thought the v-track would keep that from happening. Right now I have to hold the blade steady with a pair of needle nose with the tip of the needle nose holding the wire in place directly behind the blade to keep everything nice and centered. That's the big trick to the whole thing. So long as I do that the thing works great. Just not the way it's supposed to. If I can make a new one that works nice and simple I'm thinking about calling Invent Help. Don't have the money for the patent and parts forging on my own. To be a professional tool it needs to be all metal. Something that will last. Sorry about the ramblings. I'm half asleep and getting loopy.

My idea for a wire stripper is to take a crowbar with a V shape in it and run the wire through your V. you can then take a circular blade and put it into the V. The trick is to mount this all on something that will not move. Then you just need a motor to pull it all through. You will have to find a good crowbar though. with the V shape in the middle vs on the ends. I have one and I will take a picture soon

A good wire stripper would be worth it's weight in gold x 5. I could sit in my car all day stripping while I wait for calls.

A wire granulator would make my life a lot easier. I have several 55 gallon barrels of insulated.

I'm thinking about buying a stripper on Ebay this week but as I've never used one it's a worry. Don't want to blow a load on a gimmick or something I use once and throw in the scrap box.
