New to scrapping- how to get best pricing

    New to scrapping- how to get best pricing

    Hello-



    New to scrapping, but would like to approach the topic seriously. Curious, how would you suggest a person that lives in the vicinity of many scrap yards, figure out the best price for a particular metal? Do I need to call each yard every time I have something to scrap? Should I expect large discrepancy in prices for small amounts of metal?

    I guess I am wondering if I should be accepting the first reasonable price I get on my small loads or if there is a benefit to checking a few dealers.

    The best advice you will receive on this forum will be to read, read and read again as many of the older posts as possible. And then, visit all of the yards and find the one you feel comfortable with. By all means do not piss off the person that weighs your load at the yard.

    If you have a lot of yards then chances are the biggest one is buying from the smaller ones. You may find better proces there, but the service may be lacking. Go for a visit and see what prices are.

    I call several times a week for prices.
    Its smart business to know what your material is worth on a daily basis.
    Especially if your buying!

    When I have enough to sell I start calling the yards and get prices. When I get to the yard I ask the guys at the scale before I unload. You can't complain about getting screwed if you shop around and call before going.

    Build up small amount of every item you can think of and than take it in and read your receipt, doing this over and over you can keep track of where pays highest for what

    THIS is exactly what I found when I took my 1st load off. I have 2 small scrap yards 15 mins from me but I have 3 HUGE one's 1 hour from me. I own a small scrapping outfit of 10 employee's, 2 of which owns tractor's with 1 dump trailer and a car hauler not to mention various trucks and lowboys. Trust me it looks like a Convoy coming down the road when we leave out on Sat mornings to the scrap yard but we always go to one of the LARGE yards that is an hour away reason being is MORE MONEY BETTER TREATMENT. The yards will learn you and they won't hoo de do ya like the smaller one's will saying ur bare bright is # 2. All 3 of my BIG YARDS treat us like family and that's how we like it.
