Think about it this way. Its not worth much these days, yes there is a 'price value' to it....

But so has wood, if you cut it down, cut it up, dry it, stack it, transport it and sell it for firewood...

Not much difference with scrap metal, its the time, the tools and the knowledge that you put into it that makes it worth something to someone.

See the problem I think, in my opinion, is when people are getting charged for a service, they come to expect you to do the job flawlessly, without damaging anything (which is perfectly acceptable). And if you do chip the paint on a doorway while squeezing a fridge through it after you had to take the fridge doors off to make it an extra tight fit, you will be expected to fix it.

Now if it's a free service, you can't be expected to be "professional" in every aspect of what you're doing, and people tend to be more forgiving about small stuff.

I always advertise as free pick up. Even if I have to drive 20 miles to pick up a water heater. You hope by doing this (and giving a business card), you are going to be getting a repeat customer.

Even with steel at $60/ton, I still offer free.

    To each their own.
I WOULD not remove anything inside a building without charging and I better be insured !

if i ever even dream of charging, forget it- i wont get called for anything that ive picked up so far.
actually, i had PAY for scrap once but it was VERY profitable.

i did get paid once for cutting up & removing an old car that the owners wanted gone from their property.
after i showed them that my costs incurred was almost equal to the the money i made off the metal from the car, they gave me another US$ 220.

what i do though, is NOT to make a special trip for a small load- if the ppl dont want to wait, then theyre free to dispose of it themselves.
however, many of the ppl i pick up from are known to me & they generally wait for me until im in their area- they understand that i cant be spending more on fuel than what their scrap is worth.

I saw a guy on youtube that has a little metal recycling business.
He puts up dropoff bins for specific items people want to throw away.

Wouldnt it be better to have those pickup points, to limit a lot of variables, and have more consistent scrap?

Yes, that is exactly what I do and I'm upfront with my expectations. If the item is in the driveway...it's free. If its inside the house; there is a fee. Insurance costs $$$$!

Ive never charged a fee, but I have been asked what Im willing to pay. My reply has always been "I dont buy scrap". Sometimes I get it sometimes I get the boot.

Of course, a charge is fair. All things need to be taken into account, not just the time

No charge here. i made my contacts from picking threw company's dumpsters every day. They see me there every day around the same time so they hold it and if its a big score they call me to get rid of it ASAP. Some times i have to go to the job sites so they dont have to load it, haul it back to the shop and unload it.. So if i charged them, they would just put it out for anyone to take again and thats not a good thing in this biz....

Edit: I will ad that what i do is also cutting down on there disposal expence by not having to empty their roll offs so often, but in reality we all know that someone else would come along and take the scrap anyways....
