Was told Monday that my yard expects aluminum and aluminum can pricing to drop considerably over the summer. Then, I got up this morning, checked my other yard's prices on aluminum and they are down 10 cents since Monday....Glad I sold all the aluminum I had on Monday!
Check it out and make appropriate decisions....

My main yard has dropped to .45 from a high of .65 two months ago.

I guess I'm fortunate because here in NY aluminum cans and bottles are priced each instead of by the pound.

I could see that in states that don't have a redemption value, however, cans could drop to below a pennys worth and the state will still be required to give five cents each for cans. Although this makes perfect sense as the cost of canned soda's gone up by alot(even Sams Cola is up more then what it use to be). Bottled soda is slowly going up depending on where you get it from - Dollar General still has Voltage for a buck but Wal-Mart has it for $1.50. Sorry to steer the thread to talking about soda lol.

Certain yards here still pay $1.00 - $1.10 a pound depending on how many pounds and how they are crushed. And I feel soda prices are only going up as less people are drinking soda...

I knew I should have sold AL last weekend, it's what I get for going against the feeling.
cans are down here, high over winter .60/lb now .35/lb (two weeks ago on that price) 120 lbs of cans for $42
sheet and extrude a plenty here, going to dump it all off next week fingers crossed, we'll see what tuesday's prices are

I went to the scrap yard today and clean aluminum dropped to 45 cents a lb, and cans dropped to 40. Breakage has been at 10 cents for a while now.

Obviously the price of aluminum scrap is a function of the spot price (Kitco - Spot Aluminum Historical Charts and Graphs - Aluminum charts - Industrial metals), regardless of the huge cut most yards get for being a middleman. For a yard to say the prices are going down for the summer is silly since "the summer" has nothing to do with the manipulated spot market, which went up from 77 cents to 87 cents over a month ago for no apparent reason and then down from 87 cents to 77 in a matter of days, also for no apparent reason (other than it allowed some big players to push up so they could sell for a profit). Long term, say 3 or 4 years out, the price could be up significantly because more and more aluminum will probably be pulled by automakers who have a federal mandate to increase fuel efficiency, and thereby use lighter aluminum. Last I checked the new Ford F-150, using 800lbs of aluminum, was selling like gangbusters, but even it it wasn't they still have to replace the steel in cars with aluminum going forward. Another plus for aluminum is that is a tangible asset not susceptible to a currency collapse. And the main negative for the price of spot for all industrial metals is the potential for a depression-like collapse after hyperinflation.

I wonder if its not both supply and demand and speculation all rolled into one. In warm months, people have to consume more fluids than during the winter as well as kids being out of school and pestering the parents for things to drink. Lots of fluids options out there but overall Al can numbers used probably goes up. Suplly of empty cans go up (and the end buyers know this), price offered for scrap goes down. Throw in the big speculators who make big $$ by only a few pennies difference overall and its a lovely mix.
What I've seen in 30+ years of selling non-CRV Alum cans is that the price has gone up over that time (I used to get .25-.35 a pound in the 1980s and now its around .50 a pound although its just dropped a dime over the past couple of months). But also the value of US money has gone done so how much overall difference?? At least here, the Al can market doesn't yo-yo as much as some of the other scrap metals. I don't have space to horde so usually take in 20-25 lbs. of uncrushed cans (makes no difference here) so generally get an average over time.
