Asked and got an answer that doesn't add up...

There is a muffler shop that I drive by regularly. Every day there is a new small pile of stuff sitting on the trash side...varies from maybe 20 pounds up to a hundred or so I'd guess. Later in the day, several hours after closing, it is gone....no rhyme or reason to when though...for instance I drove by two hours after they closed today and it was still sitting there...but probably by 9 it will disappear.

So today, I stopped by and just asked one of the mechanics what they did with the scrap...'we scrap it ourselves'...which kind of doesn't add up, because if you did, why is it left in plain view along a busy street and doesn't disappear until well after closing and dark?

Is is code for "I don't know and don't care/go away/that's the default answer the boss told us to say/we have a known scrapper who picks it up/we don't know you so I'd better say no/Rob the tech has a route after work" or what?

Do I wait a month or so and go back in and ask the manager or office help? Not a big deal to me, but I hate to be passing by metal if it really is up for grabs.

We purchase laptop computers and many components for greater than scrap value. We offer a shipping reimbursement program.replies

I'd say that it's probably one of those answers. I doubt asking the manager will do much, but it can't hurt....

bring a 6 pack of brewskies.... or a tray of starbucks
then ask if you can get the stuff for free

if it works, then bring them another 6 pack once a month or whatever you think it is worth it for you

when I bought TONS (I mean TONS and TONS) of books from goodwill years ago that made me the most loved guy there (it was coffee, not even starbucks)
    grease the palm my friend

The most, important and profitable rule in any negation. "

Negotiate ONLY, with the person who has the power say yes.

"Any one else can say no. there is usually only one who can say yes."

Your first job is to find out who that person is. mcw

I can't tell you how many times I have found this to be true. When I am the customer(not in my scraping business) I normally cut quickly(abruptly) to the chase. My question to the person who just told me no is "Who here can say yes.....that's who I want to talk to next".

When I'm doing my scraping business I am much more pleasant but still get what I need. Mike
