For me there is only two options. Well, three, sort of. I moved up here about a year ago from a county that had great curbside trash and recycling pick up but here we have nothing. I can get trash pick up at a monthly rate but no recycling in this country, whether curbside or drop off. So my choices are pay for the landfill, go to the "recycling center" (transfer station) that is 15 minutes away but in the next county and pay $100/year for the privilege or the sort of 3rd option, add it to the trash pick up I pay for monthly. The only problem with that is I am limited on quantity so I generally have only one bag or one 30 gallon can I can use for plastic. So far, I have been spending most of my time working on the property but once I get back in full scrapping swing, this will not be nearly enough. I will likely opt for paying the fee at the transfer station because at least there are specific plastic bins there. I figure that between dump fees and gas it will be a wash anyway.

    Have Fun,
    Harold

    3. I don't care if it's recycled or not (my apartment doesnt have recycling bins anyways). I just want to know the best way to dispose of it without breaking any laws or pissing people off. Same with dumpster diving.
I don't know the rules for Louisville recycling but I would expect that since you live in Indiana you would not be welcome to bring recyclables in. Mike

just because your putting it in a dumpster doesn't always immediately mean landfill. check out the dumpster companies around you, even the ones your town uses if you have a transfer station. some go through the contents and remove some recyclable material if possible ( waste management comes to mind) before land filling the rest of the contents.
it's not 100% but another chance to remove recyclable waste from the never ending stream of trash.
There ain't nothing wrong with an honest days work. Anyone who says otherwise is a fool.- Old Man

I am sure you could take some of your plastic to the drop off place with not much of a problem, Now if you are going every few days with an out of state plate you may get some notice, but then again they are selling this plastic to someone, so they may not care

I definitely would like to find a way to turn this plastic into money. I'm interested in some light manufacturing because I don't pay for utilities (and single head of household lol).

Waste disposal here really isn't a problem because everything gets shipped off to be incinerated in a waste to energy plant.

Still it's a matter of conscience .... i only scrap things that i can do well. Computer towers are nice because the only waste is the plastic front panel. I wouldn't touch a printer because over 90% of it will end up going into the waste stream.

Just a suggestion : Try targeting just those things that come in metal cases for awhile & see if that doesn't bring down the amount of waste that you're producing.

This kind of thread really makes me wish there was a comprehensive list of plastic buyers out there somewhere or a list of scrap yards that also accept plastics.

where i stand now: most of my stuff comes from curb shopping (got about 50 pounds of steel last night...meh) if I can prevent even some of it from going to the dump then i am doing my best.

My computer carcasses usually have the plastic front on them when they go to the scrapyard as the yard takes whole cars with full interiors. Also freezers and fridges with full insulation, so what is a little plastic front with prices being down, down.

I'm going to be in Willisburg Ky in the next week or two. I'll bring you a van load of plastic if you want some.
