Solo Scrapping Vs. With a Helper

I'm having a bit of a dilemma here. My first week of serious scrapping, I had a friend help me and promised him 20% of whatever we got. Well we had a great 3 days here in my hometown during "Clean-out Week" We got like 6 AC's units and 3 Fridges plus hundreds of pounds of Aluminum and 1,000s of steel shred. We were having to make at least 3 drops in my driveway and heading back out for more good stuff all 3 nights. Unfortunately, due to my lack of funds I had to tell him the following month that I was unable to pay anyone to help me anymore. Which was not a lie. But now that I look back it seems like having 2 heads on a swivel with compact flashlights and magnets in-hand seemed to net me Way More Scrap then going Solo has since. Then again it Just started Snowing here, Well past it's due date. Maybe that's the only reason for me not scoring big lately.

I'd like some personal opinions on Solo Curbside Scrapping during "Clean-out Nights vs. With a Helper please.Thx

After-thought. BTW I don't need help loading the heavy stuff as I am quite large and strong myself.

In my own case, partnerships rarely work out. Had one for a very short time and been solo since. Just my opinion.

The only time I want a helper is when something is to heavy to lift by myself. Payment would come in the form of beer. If you are only curb shopping prices are to low to be splitting with a partner.
Money is not the root of all evil, the love of money is.

I can only speak as a solo scrapper. I may bring in folks sometimes for a special project, or something is to much for just me. We agree on a price an thats that. Or I pay in beer..whatever, depends on the job an help. lol.

Now having said that..I've trained myself to do this solo. another pair of hands usually gets in my way. I do a lot of ewaste, so really don't need a hand to often with heavy stuff. I try not to take projects on that are more then I can handle, sometimes they do being more then I thought, but I either get it done by myself or call in some help.

You being where you are(if in a city, can only go by NJ..it's a big place. :P ), it might be better to have two sets of eyes, etc. Lots of hidey places in a city, ally ways, apartment complexes, industrial areas, etc etc. For me on my sandbar? I don't really need an extra set most of the time. Most is out in the open if it's to take. If it's not at the curb, it belongs to someone.

You gotta go with what works best for you. Then you need to decide if your friend/help is a partner or an employee. To big differences. An make sure he's on board with it to avoid issues. You can define employee as you like, but at the day your the boss an don't HAVE to run ideas by the help. Or if he's a partner..then you do have to share all that with him unless you agree otherwise.

I do notice lots of folks here work alone, but I think I've seen some "teams" post before in the past.

Good luck an let us know how it works out for you.

Sirscrapalot - Hi ho, hi ho, it's off to work I go. - Seven loud an in my opinion drunk dwarves.

when it comes to a paid assistant, its BEST not to use close friends or immediate family- like brothers etc
cos they tend to do too little & expect too much in return and if things go really sour, then u still have to see their ugly faces after work

    best to use a stranger
that way he knows where he stands & wont take things too easy

i prefer to work on my own and only use an assistant when a job is def too much for me to handle alone.

I have had friends ride along and help me do a big pickup from time to time when I was more actively doing it. I was more than happy to show them the ins and outs of scrapping and how I made money, in hopes that they themselves can make money. It is a supplemental income for me anyways, so if I'm not picking up, it's not the end of the world. Usually a ride along paid for beer when we got home, or a meal ticket, or even just some knowledge. I've helped out quite a few people get started on it over time.

You'd have to be pretty big time to actually need a second person. 2 people almost never work, unless it's you and your dad, or your son/daughter/etc.

My wife has been very supportive of all of my extracurricular endeavors, as most of them have at least made me some money on the side, or paid enough to break even plus some knowledge.

People that know that I do a lot of buying/selling scrapping tend to hold on to things for me versus throwing them away. Hell my boss even gave me a digital camera last week to sell.

Just my thoughts on partnerships and working with friends:

I have a handyman business and I have worked with people and for friends in the past. I made a choice a long time ago that any job or partnership is not worth losing a friend. I will walk away rather than poison a friendship as true friends are too hard to find and keep. The equation would look something like this...

    Friend > work - pay

When there is a limited time on gathering a LOT of material I would say a helper may be a good idea.

can he work for a % of the weeks total again?
don't need funds, just share the payout.

This was my thought exactly. Just take your helper to the yard with you and pay him right then and there.

I have two scrap partners, a yellow and black lab. Their job is to take care of varmints and keep them out of my way. The main culprits are skunks and raccoons. They work for scraps. My sons work for me once in a while, but I scared them to death when they were younger they will not cross paths with me. To be honest they come back to the ranch in the summer for family time and enjoy the experience. Then when I need help loading things I have three partners, a skid steer and two loaders.

So to answer your question, my only partners work for scraps, fuel, or the experience. I will not hire anyone because of insurance, liability, and lawsuits. This is my story and I will stick with it.
Give back more to this world than we take.

A friend and I scrapped together for a while, he lives overseas now and was holidaying at his own house in the same town as me.
We found it worked good, our recovery $ were good because I had no vehicle and he could borrow one.
That ment we were able to get scrap I could not have gotten myself and we could break it down quicker and get onto the next job faster.
Also we could just get scrap continually and hoard it for a few days, then scrap it out.
We also taught each other handy ideas though I think I taught him more, as it is.

We did break everything down as far as possible, my idea. Normally 'we' wouldn't. We also spent a bit of unproductive time looking for scrap, simply because we could break it down faster and then had nothing to do.

For a short time I thought I got 'shortchanged' on one sale, until I found a sack of scrap Copper we had put aside and forgotten about.
We did do a LOT of scrap though, and we got paid for the steel back then too.

We found we were getting about 40% return each and 20% went to 'overheads', some of that overheads went to friends for vehicle and tool use, like we borrowed a 'sawzall' and brought blades for it and gave the unused blades to the owner for using it.
The odd $5 to get someone to "give us a hand loading" or incentive, or 'finders fee'.
I found the 9inch anglegrinder better and I completey forgot I had a compressed air chisel to use, for splitting up a old van that could not be towed off a property because stuff had been built in front of it. drats.

Because we did more scrap in the same time, and saved up our scrap till we had to move it because of storage issues, we got some nice $400 & $500 payouts. We also put it under his name and he lived overseas.
(when I did my scrap later after he left, it was under my name, so less $ under my name at the end of the year. We do not pay tax on scrap income here normally)

We did enjoy doing it, we also got firewood for heat and a few $ during this time too. It was for a set time though, it was not a 'open ended' scrap agreement. It finished when he left NZ.
I was OK with teaching him how to scrap as after he went back, he could do it there and it wouldn't affect my future scrapmetal volumes.

Yep, scrapping with someone can work, but mostly it won't. Someone always thinks because they supplied more scrap they should get more$, or knows more so should get more $, or had the tools to get more done should get more $..... Or its done in one persons property..
Also, if someone breaks something that's going to co$t $$, what's the story there?

Its nice to have a ''spotter'' sitting on the other side of the vehicle for me because lots of times garbage is below window level of my truck and I'm apt to pass stuff up at night especially if I'm alone.

I've tried scrapping with a brother but he never ends up helping with the break down so I don't pay him for any of the scrap that gets broken down. plus, he wasn't understand that gas and taxes come right off the top and argued with me a couple times about his share when I did pay him.

It's also nice to have someone if I run across something too heavy to load alone.

3 years ago my cousin and i would go out on our days off and gather all kinds of scrap. He supplied the truck and we each split gas. We split the money from the scrap yard 50/50. That went on for bit over a year with no problem before his truck kept breaking down and he ended up getting rid of it.

One thing about scrap recycling is it's always about The bottom line Once you Cash in product
    First does it cover gas
    Second does it cover wage
To cover one persons wage is not easy during current pricing
to keep two workers happy it comes down to simple math
how much poundage will you acquire day in day out
Two guys can work out , But only if each scrapper can manage by them selves
regardless so when there together they become a BIG ONE Kick ass force .
Each scrapper has to be equal in scrap finding ability so this way 2 become 1
naturally 2 need cover twice the territory

I am back to my skill set from the 80's Painting & all that follows it
I removed myself from the trash company I worked for as of 2 years ago
I find scrap non the less

I have learned I would rather work alone. There has only been a few times I got a helper that's when I had a lot of stuff or heavy things. To me if you are working with family or friends it turns into a bad situation with hard feelings towards each other.

I work with my wife and that is fine. I have worked with my brother, sister, brother-in-law, and sister-in-law. I was 100% legit with taxes, payroll, and everything. Brother has a hard time with authority so it was doomed from the start. He is just very argumentative....with everyone lol. Sister was such a bad idea...horrible worker....the worst! Never again! Sister-in-law was ok.....but a huge dingbat and lost me too much money on eBay. Never again. Brother-ln-law was the best and I wish I could still afford to hire him. He understood at work I was the boss, after work we went back to being family. So many jobs he hated but he still did them. I do not have any issues with any of these people, but have learned a hard lesson. Chances are family will lose you money(except ont rare occasions). I initially started out with a business partner but the closer we got to opening up shop the more worried he got so I bought him out immediately. I saw potential loss of my best friend on that so we cut that off ASAP. I now just work with wifey and occasionally my ex partner when wifey is busy with real estate and my cousin, who is 14 and completely opposite of every stupid teenager on the planet in that I actually enjoy his company lol. When I do hire again it will be strangers, and, if possible only vets.

Determine never to be idle. No person will have occasion to complain of the want of time who never loses any. It is wonderful how much may be done if we are always doing.

Thank Everyone!!! I never expected so much advice on this from so many My main gripe with my helper was basically this. It's my Pick-Up Truck. I fill the tank with gas, I bought all the scrapping tools. Saws-All, Angle Grinder, countless other tools, TNT Wire stripper Table Vice. Bought the Freon removal machine and tanks Paid to get HVAC Section 608 Type 1 certified etc... I was letting him drive as he's had experience driving Wreckers etc... since his family owns a local Auto Scrap Yard. He's big like myself and had a good eye for spotting good scrap pile curbside plus I was able to concentrate on spotting it 100 times better from the passenger seat knowing he was good driver, And yes I'm scrapping here in my home town which was once a quite suburb of Newark NJ but has since become Overpopulated to the point where you can barely find parking on the street now thus many piles are Very Hard to spot behind all the tightly parked cars now. Anyway The part that was annoying me was that I'd spend days and days scrapping out our finds with all the tools that I bought. to make them "Clean" only to have him ask "so what did you get for the stuff we grabbed last week" It pissed me off as all he did was load it on the truck. But without his extra pair of eyes I'm guessing we might not have scored so many goodies in the first place. Anyway he's got plenty of money and I don't but I fear that I may have damaged our friendship when I told him I couldn't afford to pay anyone anymore.

P.S. I went on Solo Scrap Run tonite, Brought my Hand Truck/Dolly Scored a full sized Fridge. A Dell Desktop PC tons of Aluminum gutters that I had to climb over snow piles to get at all the while with a tenant of the apt building asking me to be quite and not make a mess to which I was perfectly polite about it to. Afew other things Oh A Heavy Treadmill too. Anyway Seems like people around here don't take advantage of "Clean-Out" week when theirs lots of Snow still on the ground like they do when it's warmer.

You can keep your helper .
Use a spread sheet or calculator
    and put on paper

    Be up front
    tool cost (blades grinder wheels)
    tool investment cost
    Put cost of fuel
cost of auto insurance (the percent needed for work) as I figure your truck is also other use
all else that is needed to be in business
    Your hours of work
    His hours of work
In reality once businesses cost are paid you can pay each other
equal pay in relation to hours of work .
He needs to realize first pay out is related to operational or there is no business otherwise
if operational is too much even you may decide it's a wash
