i just toss them in the tin pile w/ the tires. unless its an alum frame of course
Yard by me have to remove the tires or they wont take them...
I just take off the tires so they look better and my yard takes it as iron.
yeah some yards might have a problem. id call your yard just to make sure. But the yard i use doesn't seem too and ive seen guys bring in huge loads of bikes w/ tires... ive also seen guys bring in those baby stroller type things that only have a little metal in it, and they took that too
Where I am located in the northeast there are at least 5 yards in a 40 min drive distance. Some want no tires on bikes, lawn tractors etc. Three of them don't care at all, bikes and lawn tractors with wheels get to go with the light steel at $200/$195 per gross tonne. It seems to be the yards that take cars that are easier..these guys just tell me 70% metal and that's all it takes for light iron.
I strip the tires on the bikes I take in. It seems depending on the day of the week or what mood these guys are in at the yards I go to if they will accept tires or not. Anymore I try and do my best to keep all the other junk out of the steel. I won't get crazy with it but tires I take off.
I try and take off most of the heavy plastic, wood, etc..on whatever I can. Makes my load look "cleaner" and I hope down the line it gives me an "edge" in pricing or goodwill...I might be dreaming on that but it's how I look at it anyway.
re: bikes. You might look for a bike repair shop around you and work a deal. A guy up the road from me was giving me $5 for every bike I brought him, regardless of condition. The past year or so, I've just been giving him the bikes. He brings back the frames he doesn't want and scrap metal he accumulates.
People may laugh at me, but that's ok. I laugh all the way to the bank.
I have a local bike shop that sells new and used, and I take them all there. Prices usually are $5 to upwards of $50 a piece.
Went magnet fishing today, we found 5 bikes, a cart and 3 heavy bike locks. Going to the scrapyard tomorrow to bring in 3 of the 4 bikes I could take in my van. (The last one is too good to bring in, gonna clean it up!). No idea what the local yards want, but I'm stripping off the tires. And getting the aliminuim wheels off, of course!
