    POS systems?

Did a quick search and didn't see anything...anyone know how to set these up to test?

my kid called and said the restaurant he worked at got new computer systems and threw out all the old stuff, and his boss said I could have it. been sitting by the dumpster for a week...can't believe no one took it but it's at a college off-campus apartment.

filled up the entire bed on my pickup. among the goodies: 4 servers, 2 desktop pro PC's, 16 touchscreen monitors, 6 "caller ID boxes" with software disc (I think they are for the cc machines). 6 Credit card readers, 14 cc printers, 6 thumb/fingerprint readers, 6 UPS (all but 1 said bad battery), boxes of cables, mouse/keyboards, couple headsets.

I already scrapped the Gold laden servers (the ram and drivers were missing). I know how to test the PC's (one is labeled main server) Dell OptiPlex GX620 & GX680.

But the Point of Sale stuff--the main setup is "touch Dynamic". one of the touch screens has a built in computer, with a handle to slide out. still has the drive and stuff. the ENTIRE board is gold. never seen anything like it. also the terminal boards/modems from the servers are all gold plated, not just the finger ends.

so this touch dynamic setup could be worth several grand from what I see if I can get it to work, but I have no idea if the main screen with the built in computer runs on its own or needs to plug into another PC or what...

Anyone know anything about this stuff?? Hate to just scrap it, I see working POS setups like this for $7k on my local craigslist...

    POS systems?

I have only installed one POS system but I think it is likely that a test for full utility will involve signing up for an account with the POS setup crew. In lieu of that situation, I would setup the terminal, server, and cash box just see if anything would boot. If it isn't junk, you should be able to at least get the drawer open, which is important. I may have missed it in the post but do you know the POS provider (Square, PayPal, Entree, etc.)?

Another thought is to take the whole lot to a restaurant supply/business equipment warehouse and ask them if they auction, buy, or consign. I probably wouldn't bother trying to test stuff, myself; that's a lot of work without knowing your market. The people most likely to buy this equipment will be looking to add to an existent, matching system. I can't imagine a buyer of a secondhand POS for a startup who wouldn't go to an equipment supplier, first.

If the resteraunt is francised you may as well forget about accessing root on the POS software.

yes it is franchised, but not a big chain, there are 2 in town. just a small college area sandwich type shop.

not sure the provider, there was a local POS restaurant service sticker on the main terminal but it wasn't anything well known like paypal or square or anything...

i'll look into the supply auction type thing, but I did see the touchscreens sell for $250 ea. refurbished on ebay, what that means I'm not sure...I will have to clean the grease (smells like French frys) off everything and see what I can get to work one at a time.

oh and the cash drawer wasn't locked, so by unscrewing the case I unlatched the catch and it opened. found a dozen or so gift cards in there but doubt they are activated. i'll give them to my kid to give the owner...

looks like the fingerprint scanners sell for $65 without software on amazon...

The francise owner will have accounting software on the POS server that they're able to access remotly. This is how the francise owner prevents errant bookkeeping and finacial reporting they have a secured back door to the server.

Break it down and sell parts or you could over wright the resident POS software with something from the open source list below.
