What a rip off. Viking upper end appliances have cheap stainless in them.

Oh, and $7,000 for a fridge bends my mind. Does it entertain the food? Does it babysit the food? Make sure there are no food fights? I just need to keep my food cold. I don't even pay anywhere near 7k for vehicles. Not personal vehicles anyway. Maybe a flip or two.

You're right though. Guy has loads of expendable cash.

However, I am going to call Viking because we have a little issue with the refrigerator. When I open the door, the drawers on both sides where you put your veggies in won't stay and would slide out if I don't put something underneath, like a piece of towel. This appliance is not leveled well. Other than that, it's perfect. Hopefully, somebody can fix my ref's drawers so they will not slide when I open the main door, because that's very annoying.

Had an older Kenmore drier given to me last week. It was a tan color. Ugly but real clean with the cord. Quit working so they bought a new one. Got it home. Checked the door switch. One wire had backed off or was never installed correctly loosing contact. Anyway pushed the connector back on and the machine worked great. Sold it a few hours later on Craigslist. To an older Hispanic lady for $75 bucks. They put it on the roof of their car. Never even took it off the trailer. I have no problem fixing what I know I can sell and here there is a huge demand for good used appliances. White is the color of choice but other colors sell too. As I scrap out the appliances I keep parts and pieces. I have a box full of the drier door switches, drum wheels and other misc stuff.

I get stupid simple fixes all the time. Most recently I got a Honda Accord for cheap, because it “wouldn’t go into gear”.

Got it home. Any guesses? A clamp on transmission line came loose and lost the fluid. Fixed that, topped it off and it ran through the gears just fine.

Another was a washer. Guy called. I said have it outside. I arrived. It was half full of water. Glad I didn’t have to drag it out of the house.“Yeah, it stopped agitating”.

Got it home. After a few minutes I figured out the lid switch had come undone. Repaired it and it worked fine.

So long as people can’t be bothered to use the brain God gave them, we’ll have opportunities to make money.

I have to admit this right now, I didn't expect the response I got. I figured by your smf handle and your location that it would be a hard flip locally and I wanted a built in so I could repair it and give it to my grandparents for xmas (who have replaced their built in with an old kenmore). Assumptions are a heck of a thing though.

So let me get this straight. The Viking appliance is a ripe off because the stainless steel alloy that was used (magnetic vs non magnetic)? There is probably a good reason for that other than cost.

I'm kinda thinking RSL and RePurp are related, maybe brothers? I'm trying to wrap my mind around having to sell this fridge after it's fixed for 7 grand. Doesn't matter that it's built in. Doesn't matter it was 7500 new. This is the reason we went into our last recession. No matter what anyone says, that fridge is NOT worth anything right now. Sitting in your garage, it's worth nothing. THe stuff on Walmart's shelves right now, is worth nothing. Until you can get someone to buy it for a price you both agree on, any product anyone has is worth nothing. Houses are/were being sold on what they "think" it's worth. That's wrong. It's only worth replacement/other purchaser price. We need to get back to this mentality.

You would have to have rocks in your head to buy a 100 year old house at replacement value. It's not a rational choice. Still .... some people buy based upon how they "feel" about a thing. For them, the old places have sentimental value.

It's a very real thing. If you can keep an open mind and be tolerant there's a lot of money to be made from doing business with these people.

Same / same with a Viking. From a common sense point of view a fridge is just a fridge. It's absurd to pay seven grand when you could buy a very nice fridge at Home Depot for a fraction of the cost.

Still .... the Viking is a status symbol. Some people have to surround themselves with the finer things in life because it makes them feel good about themselves. You can't put a price on that.

Well .... actually you can.

I understand the point of the thread but as an engineer I can tell you the failure of most refrigeration beyond the electronic control systems involved has to do with efficiency. Point in fact, the heat pulled out of the fridge goes somewhere, in a free standing fridge there are two designs, a radiator style grid that is attached to the back of the fridge and creates a large area with which to exhaust the heat and is quite efficient at that and option two, heat is exhausted by force to the front via ventilation. A viking uses ventilation but the compressor package is still not ventilated itself AND despite the manual saying you need to clean the coil twice a year...a house with dogs, cats, and so on...will cause it to work harder and fail quickly. They are not made to run inefficiently, the envelope that the compressor has to operate and be able to cool means if it loses 10% of it's efficiency it might create 50% additional load.

Anyways, it does bring up a good point, static merch is valueless, it's not until sold does it mean anything.

What I take from the thread is yes magnetic SS has little value as compared to non-magnetic SS making scraping appliances something I would charge to haul away.

If you have the curiosity, knowledge to resell parts or learn how to repair and market appliances then there is a direction for your scrap business.

I took one of the comments that was suggesting repairing the stove and to me was directed at the originator of the thread rather that the home owner.

I profit by others laziness or lack of knowledge or just lack of time required to fix or part out various items. I have found used items generally sell for between 10-50% of new retail. This is the part of recycling that I'm drawn to and enjoy. 73, Mike
