good hand held digital fishing scales at Walmart or find a bathroom scale and use that

I bought myself a Pelouze analog scale. I like it a lot and don't have to worry about power or batteries. I believe it has a 100# limit. Bought it off ebay and it was very reasonable.

Apples and oranges. But it depends on what you want to use it for. If you are just weighing something for yourself to give you a good idea of what you've got, then go ahead and get a "not too expensive" scale. But if you are looking to use the scale to make purchases for profit, then get a scale that is legal for trade. Those are not cheap. But to me there are ethics that should be adhered to and an honest scale is one of them.Originally Posted by mike1

I know nothing about scrapyard scales but a quick google search showed some floor scales similar to the ones I see at scrapyards starting a 1500 dollars.
Compared to a 30 dollar walmart scale?
I guess it's okay to weigh your scrap to get an idea of how much you have.
I hope you don't plan on getting into a pissing contest with your yard if their weight is a few pounds less than what your scales read.

if you go into a yard and start talking "it weighs on my scale" it will be a very bad day. no one in scrap trusts or uses anyone else's numbers, purchase or sell, it is the purchasers scale that makes the official number.

I used to weigh the pc cases that I had filled up with metal after removing the circuit boards. This was back when shred was 200 a ton. I used the bathroom scales my wife bought for 5 dollars. I did it to get a rough estimate of the weight but I don't weigh my shred anymore. If I have a bucket of #1 or #2 copper I might weigh it. I deal with 3 different yards now and they're good people. I trust them.
I think that in the beginning take everything apart to see what's inside and weigh stuff until you are comfortable that you know what you are doing.
Selling shipping more valuable items then shipping is still a good idea. I purchased a "postal" scale from ebay that can weigh up to 70 lbs and I have been happy with it. 73, Mike

Shipping some stuff out, I used a bathroom scale to estimate the weight 68 lbs, actual weight 70 lbs. Fairly close...

I use a digital weight watchers scale I got at a garage sale for $1... I overpaid.
