Forklift Scrap????

Depends on what type of forklift it is, and they're probably nailing you because of that giant weight on the back of the forklift. Those things are a PITA. If it's electric that battery is worth taking out. If it's propane all those connectors are brass, take those out. After that not sure.

Thanks dherik. It is propane. I removed the heavy weight from the back of forklift this morning. Im thinking I will load it with my next load of light iron and just bury it beneath the pile. The yard said they would pay me the .10lb if I wanted to take the time to break it down myself.

DONT SCRAP THEM OUT. SELL IT ON EBAY. It is one of those items that will sell more than scrap worth. Call up forklift company by you. They would LOVE to buy it for the items on there they can part out. There are many items on a forklift that never go bad...if you know how to work on motors you can get it running pretty cheap. But as is I wont be shocked if someone will give you about a grand for it NOT CHOPPED UP!

Ok. Thanks for suggestion easyrecycle. Im gonna slow down a little and do some research on this. I also came across a Fume Hood from a lab. Its also called a biological safety cabinet! Any ideas where I can turn this into some serious cash? Looks like it cost $11,300.00 New. I dont know what i am dealing with?

I'm assuming you're in Texas? Do all the fans and everything work?

Yes, Texas! I haven't tried turning it on yet, but the manager at the lab says it was working last time they used it , about 6 months ago. He also said the motor was making a load noise. From the info. I have found on in internet, looks like this equipement is suppose to be certified before moving. The lab techs told me they didnt use any hazardous materials in the cabinet, only skin samples. Can I legally sell this?

Well if you can't 'legally' sell it I might be interested in it for my next shop, I'm always on the lookout for fume hoods. I guess that depends on the price too, I go down to Texas 4 times a year so might be interested, and could probably pick it up too

Most forklifts also have a few ounces of silver contacts for the high amperage motor controls

On the hoods, you might try listing on Bid On Equipment.

I sold 2 pieces of equipment recently for far more than I could have gotten locally. Even more than eBay. One of them being a meat tumbler that I bought from a local auction for $310 and sold for $3,300. Highest offer I got on eBay was $1,200.

Just updating what I have done with the forklift since last posting. I posted an ad on CL selling it for parts only. I only had one hit from a guy wanting the mast. Never heard from him again after i sent more pics. So after waiting two weeks and no calls, I decided it was time to sell. I worked a day removing most aluminum, copper wires, and brass fittings. I called around for best price. The yard I have been going to for the last year, at least a few times a week, was still only offering .08 lb. I found another yard that paid me .11 lb. The weight was 6700 lbs. I got a whooping $730.00 for a broke forklift, thats not including all the other metals i harvested or the main parts i removed from it. Im going to try this yard again. The only bad part was the yard paid me with a check? Their policy states that all amounts over $500 will only be paid by check. Is this normal? My main yard seems to always pay cash. Anyways, Im still very happy.

Cash is king, but if that is the way they handle it, then you are stuck with it. Be prepared for a 1099.
