another gamble

So this popped up on a local facebook auction site with the caption : Roll of wire, 3c , 14 wag, great for making your own extension cords, lots left on the roll, starting bid $25.00 CAD.


I would be looking to scrap this but its hard to tell how much is on that roll. The seller is vague on how much is left.

Would you take a chance on it site unseen?

Purchase a $10.00 OHM meter and take the guessing out of the equation. Here's and online calculator but there's probably apps available for your phone.

Estimate the Length of a Wire

You can use this calculator to estimate how much wire is left on a spool.

1. Start by measuring the resistance of the length of wire. Use an ohmmeter to measure the resistance of the wire. If you use a 2-wire measurement the calculator assumes you have 0.2 ohms of lead resistance. If you make a four-wire measurement the estimate will be more accurate.
2. Enter the resistance into the calculator.
3. Select the wire gauge on the calculator.
4. Click the "Calculate Wire Length" button.

Retail for that is about US$75 per 100 feet on the low end. Unless those are really big stickers and that spool is huge my guess is that is far shy of 100ft. At C$25 you could get your money back if you resold it as is prolly. If my size guess is right though you'd break even at the absolutely most via scrap, most likely lose money.

I wouldn't even consider buying it unless I knew exactly how much is on the reel, and keep in mind the starting bid is $25.

3 core 14 gauge wire shown goes for under $3.00 a meter according to a quick Google search.

I would buy it scrap the cable and turn the spool into one big giant Heely...
