What is the easiest way to seiarte metal types? Is it even necessary. We have our first load ready, but not one of the 5 yards around here are helpful at all. Thanks!

magnet to separate out the steel from the rest
What hobo said about the magnet. Then buckets for the other metals. And when you have time recommend going through and reading starting with the scrap metal basics section. The amount of expertise shared there is tremendous and will help both in maximation your return as well as ease your work

whatever doesnt stick to the magnet- remove it and keep it aside
if theres anything screwed on to steel that doesnt stick- unscrew it and keep it aside
then take all your steel in for now
and u can work on figuring out what those non ferrous metals are later.

Magnetic iron and sheet metal are ferrous which usually pays by the ton so you can figure it out per pound yourself. Non-ferrous is not magnetic and includes aluminum, bronze, brass, copper etc. I don't know about your load, but the best way to separate it is to use your magnet and use your two eyes.
*Edit Oh and some containers for all your non-ferrous stuff. That stuff is worth more money.

It's a matter what stile of scrapping you want to follow .
I've met many scrappers at yards & surprising some don't bother to dismantle
(they tend to be the ones with large loads ) they get it get rid of it . But clean non Ferris
that is, as is , no scrapper lets get past . Scrapper's generally only need concern them selves with
Copper - Brass - Stainless Steel (non magnetic ) Aluminum - Lead - Pot metals(Zinc alloy) those are in general the non Ferris metals us scrapper's find
Ferris are the mix steel - short steel & lower grade Stainless steel - Look it up on the net & you will get the needed pictures .
The truth is wile there are dry times, over all scrap is all over and non ending . So for now just collect build up weight
& get paid You've got plenty of time to get things right what you find today you will find next week to Ad nauseam

best help I could give is this is the scrap yard I use https://rockawayrecycling.com/ this could be a good start. when I started scraping and learning and Rockways website I would have went though the school of hard knocks.
