    Need advice in Arizona

I am looking for anyone who lives in the Tucson area that might be willing to chat with me about scraps yards there. I live over an hour from there and want to chat/email with someone who can recommend a good yard to work with. I have tried calling some of them but they always seem busy and sometimes the person doesn't know if they take a particular item and to just bring it in. This will not work because of the commute. I don't want to take a load of say cast aluminum hard drive cases only to get there and find they won't take it for some reason or another. I am new to scrapping and am looking at mostly ewaste, aluminum and copper.

I would worry about them saying something about HD cases, yea. I know mine does here in NW Florida.

As long as they are clean (No metal/boards/screws etc) I wouldn't see the problem......If they are just hard drives without boards then true some scrap yards won't take them

The yards suck for ewaste here. I would send a email to CFS scrap metal on President street by Kino hospital and see what they say the guy generally will respond to emails the same day you send to him. They are about the best price for regular scrap in town 99% of the time.
    Better than the dump!

Thanks Hobo. I will email and see what they have to say. Do you know of a local source for scrapping Hard Drive boards? I have a bunch but I would like to avoid shipping if possible, it is just too expensive.

I wish. I ship mine out with other boards and such. We have several good buyers on this site and shipping costs are high, but if you can put together a pallet of stuff we have a member here who can help cut down the shipping costs a lot. I wish I had enough stuff to ship by freight!

It's not AZ but the problem i had with stripped HDD cases was that the guy at the yard didn't know what they were and tried to give me sheet price.

Best thing with shipping e-waste is to do the math. Just a rough guess but it might be .80 cents a pound to ship ?

The buy price listed by one of our more popular buyers is 9.25 / lb for HDD boards. Deduct .80 for shipping and you're left with a net profit of 8.45 / lb. That's not bad as e-waste goes.

It would be a different story if shipping mixed computer wire. That's listed at .60 cents per pound. Deduct .80 / lb for shipping and you've got a net loss of .20 cents a pound.

It's all a numbers game and a bit of experimentation to figure out what works best in your own particular situation.

    Just a note:
Unless you are shipping in LTL or FTL --- shipping prices per pound will be very high from DHL, UPS, FedEx, and USPS.

Always know the shipping prices before committing to sending anything.

Hmm. I must be doing something wrong then. I went to Fedex to calculate the cost to mail a 20 pound package to boardsort. I estimated the box size and the quote was over $86. Thats about $4.30 shipping per pound. If you know a way to ship a lot cheaper I am all ears. Thanks.

Check out one or more of our buyers and ask them for an estimate of the cost of shipping. They can and will assist you. Check each of buyers prefered method of contacting them. You'll find on their buyer's thread how best to contact them. Be as accurate in estimating size and weight of each box.

Many have price lists posted or links to their current price list. You are at the very beginning of understanding the advantage of being a member of this forum. Keep reading the old threads.

If you are going to ship high priced items then I suggest you look at USPS. Open an account with them and get some of the free boxes sent to you. That same 20 lbs of material may ship for between $12.50-$16.50 which is a real savings.

From you location I would not ship anything of lesser value than ram, cpu and hard drive boards in the small boxes. I would start storing boxes of mobo and other lower priced material until I had enough to make a pallet load. 73, Mike

I just shipped 2 boxes at 69 lbs each Not 70 not 68 but 69 lbs each and paid $102.42 that's $0.74 per lbs. This was shipped in a large box from Walmart. I shipped this to E-Wasted.

It was fed x thru his site he gives shipping number and deducts freight from what you sent in, unlike Boardsort who is also a member on this site, where you pay shipping up front. There prices are very close on many items. I chose CFCS as he has chose to be a buyer and paid to be one on this site as one.

Also we have other buyers on this site that pay more for working parts and such. I believe you need to posts or more and then you can message people on the site.

Most of the time I just pop the boards off drives and at least three local yards here accept them that way as dirty aluminum
