    Help/Suggestion with Battery Back ups

Hey guys... could use a little advice on what to do with some large and heavy battery back ups. I have two APC AP9630 Battery backup/power supplies given to me. Do I tear these apart or sell them? They are not complete as the compartment on the right front is empty which I assume was the computer portion of the device. These things weigh about 40lbs a piece which means shipping will be a PITA and costly. Any one tear these down before? I know it has nice transformers inside but was curious about if I should sell it as is. I can try to get pics on here if that would help.

    Thanks in advance.

just tear them apart. should have a midgrade and a low grade board in it also. The batteries you should be able to sell to your local yard that buys lead acid batteries. Also there is a nice size transformer in them plus some small copper bus bars usually.

I tore apart five of these the other day. It was a first for me, but I like 'em. Don't miss those brass buss bars that make up the electrical output plugs.
I got .31 a pound for the batteries and .12 a pound for the transformers. Pretty good considering that is where most of the weight is. It adds up fast.
Copper, brass, and Leather. 3 of my favorite things.

I just tear them down. I like them, easy money. Last time got 0.40 for batteries, 0.30 for the transformers, and 0.20 for the boards. I get them quite often.

Let me chime in and say that the capacitors on those things will bite you and BITE HARD.

I bought a few in an auction lot a couple years back and the first one I tore into welded my screwdriver to the back of the low grade board.

The rest I opened the case, (carefully) removed the lead-acid batteries & dunked the remaining parts straight into a large plastic tote full of water, with a ground wire one end stuck into the water & the other into into wet ground.

I guess that drained the capacitors, none of the other UPS' did any sparking.

I've been bit by them several times.

I have been hit a couple of times from stereo power supply caps, a good 'twinge', and a 'thwak' from cutting the red wire to the suction cup on the screen of a CRT.

And a 'bzzzzzz' when I cut the platter motor wires on a microwave just after I'd tested it, and not unplugged it....

I'm quite sure a UPS power capacitor would be a whole different level on the 's--- I cannot believe I just did that, and survived' scale of being a organic electron conductor.

Could have been a scrap metal organ donor as well!
