    Copper air separation

    Hello

    I’m in a need of a air separation table for granulated wire.

    I’m based in the uk and I’m aware of the Midas range but they are rather pricey and I just want something to get me up and running before jumping into expensive machinery.

    I have never been keen on water separation just down to the fact of having to dry it after.

    Does anyone know of any other company’s or machines out there that I should be looking at?

    Wish I could recommend a brand! The ones we uses at my old job were custom builds. Your granulator didn't come with a separating table at all?

    No it’s just a stand alone granulator unfortunately. What kind did you custom build it’s impossible to find drawings or plans

    Gonna be a month or two before I'm near an air separation table again but will take some pics and do measurements for you then. It's not a complex machine. Basically it's a fine screen set at about a 5 degree angle that vibrates back and forth bouncing the insulation down and copper up with a fan beneath it.

    Hi guys, new to the forum. I’m interested in setting up my own granulation/dry separation line. I’m going to be making the whole system from scratch being that I am a fitter/fabricator by trade and can easily have components made in my workplace e.g granulator blades, pulleys, shafts screens etc. Only trouble I am having is finding somewhere I can get detailed drawings etc on such a thing. I have enquired with places like copper Rec, cable management etc and have been watching vids on YouTube of vibrating screens, air turbulence etc but struggling to get a design or drawing to put all together. Baring in mind this will be a small 230v system in my 45x25 foot workshop, does anyone know where I could get full details/drawings for one? Any help would be really appreciated

    I use a hammer mill, but you can search google patents for drawings.

    From experience, you need a table capable of variable stroke as well as speed. The reason is, and I do this nearly every day, we get a sample in of trash, run it on the wet table and find anywhere from 2-15% copper. There's a company that does quite alot of cable granulation about an hour from me, and I bought a dump trailer just for their waste. Should tell you everything right there. The table needs these factors for variability because of two things, strand size and weight and as time goes by on the knives you will start to increase the heat they produce, on vinyl insulation such as computer stuff, LV cable etc, they tend to "stick" just a bit so a more violent stroke is needed to throw the product with an increase in the declination. I try not to post process at all any vinyl insulated product, it will make it worse.

    Best brand for an air table is Guidetti, they are made in Italy, and from their website they do have UK support. You normally cannot order a table by itself as they are part of a full system, just let your sales rep know your intention, tell them the feed rate and they should be able to get you a table that will work for you.

    In the past year or two, I'm seeing stacked screen systems to separate fraction sizes. Each fraction is then sent to a different air table. The other option is to send each fraction to its own storage area until you have enough to run that size fraction.

    So we do two things here, one we are segregating by strand size in advance. For example, cat 5 isnt run with anything else, and all of the extension cord, stranded power cord etc gets run together, harness wire is run with similar stranded cordage, usually alarm wire and lv cable. I have two systems right now, one for stranded fines the other is for 14ga and up solids and stranded heavies/MCM. When it comes to that heavier stuff, the table is of very little consequence, setting the knives up for the correct sizing of the granule is about all you need.

    For the machinery setups, I focus heavily on the cut, if for example Im doing computer wire, we will run a smaller punch plate screen and only 5-7 thousands fixed edge to rotary edge with a larger backing plate gap of a 1/4 inch or so. I want two things to happen, I want the insulation to be torn away from the product and I want the strands to ball up rather than leave the initial stage as a hair. Hairs don't separate easily AND they will clump. If for example I run 3/16 punch plate, I know that adds heat to the equation but Im not going to have hair strands ill have balls that are easier to deal with in the separator.

    People who do this for a living generally dont chop fines, it gets sent out overseas or to a specialist who has a multi stage preshred and granulation process, fines might be preshredded and then go through a 3/8 punch plate screened granulator and be fed through a hammer mill or turbo mill to ball and separate. I do that primarily but I dont suggest it for his potential operation. Water sep is difficult to setup and monitor. And my water table is modified for variable stroke and rate too. We keep a recipe book for hundreds of wire types with amperage feeds and expected outputs, setup parameters etc.

    One of the newest pieces of equipment I have is a Guidetti 415 all in one, we bought it used and I set it up next to a 4x6 water table for the trash output. Guidettis are great systems but if I can recover that missing 1.5-2.5% with nothing but pump return and bag capture of insulator to dry and be sold, thats all I need. Realistically this system is doing about 150lbs of fines input per hour, its not going to make your rich overnight but if you self generate enough wire to feed it, I highly suggest it. They are only 20-25k brand new.

    Here is a video of a large system doing ASR wire. You will notice at about the 2:30 mark in the video, the stacked screener that I mentioned.

    Are they tabling by density? I have questions on that. But then, with water I can pull brass from copper and copper from leaded copper. Its nuts how sensitive it can be set up to run.

    If I was doing asr, I'd probably just rerun fractions after granulation for sizing. The granulator is accomplishing sizing, thats how I set up every operation, if you want speed and clean chops, you must be sizing as uniformly as possible. You can oversize your table, its not going to run less efficient if its too big, and its not a big user of power by comparison. I've seen guidetti systems with very large tables set with diverters, so it can do all the fractions one right after another while holding material in queue. The table is very large and it runs fractions in stages, running material until it reaches a specific weight, clearing the table, pausing the conveyor, diverting the next hopper and rerunning it at different settings, (im assuming stroke rate and air rate), and continuing until it sorted all the fractions then restarting the process with the built up material. But they do this with cell phones, laptops, even grinding boards. These systems are incredibly complex and have a fair bit of automation going on.

    For wire though, its about how much weight I can produce at a given KW/h and how much copper rerun is in the trash. I hope Im conveying this well, I'm not a big fan of just running all kinds of equipment, in engineering your just taking up space, consuming power and adding more fail points.

    Anyways, chopping isn't even the main project right now. Building a hydraulic stator processor with shear and puller. Its a prototype but definitely something we might be selling. We are also looking at transformer processing, but the market at scale is a bit more competitive than stators and sealed units.
