    Where to find scrap nickel?

    I was thinking nickel is 8$ lb thats more than copper. Im looking for objects that are non ferrous nickel i read somewhere also that there is ferrous nickel also. But im looking for non ferrous. I know of coin nickels but cant scrap those ha ha.

    Nickle is seldom used in its purest form, under one of my many previous nics I did post a lengthily thread on nickle.

    Background

    Nickel alloys are used extensively because of their corrosion resistance, high temperature strength and their special magnetic and thermal expansion properties.
    The major alloy types that are used are:


    Stainless steels

    The majority of the stainless steels contain 8-10% nickel. In all cases it is the combination of chromium with the nickel that does the job. Stainless steels are also useful as fire retardant materials since they retain their strength to higher temperatures than structural steel.

    The most common stainless steel is the 304 grade with 8% nickel and 18% chromium and the balance iron. This is used for such common items as spoons and forks, saucepans and kitchen sinks. Where extra corrosion resistance is required, such as for roofing in marine applications, type 316 is used. This has about the same amount of nickel and chromium as 304 but with 3% of molybdenum added. The balance is again iron.


    There are many other stainless steels to cover the wide spectrum of demands of engineers and architects such as nickel plated steel (NPS).

    Nickel Copper Alloys

    These nickel copper alloys are sometimes referred to as NiCu and contain nickel with copper and small amounts of iron and manganese. A typical nickel copper alloy is the 400 grade (UNS N04400). This nickel copper alloys contains 63% nickel minimum, 28-34% copper, and a maximum of 2% manganese and 2.5% iron. There are also a small number of impurities kept at limited values to ensure the metal's properties are not harmed.

    These nickel copper alloys are used where a higher strength is required compared to pure nickel. Nickel copper alloys have a wider range of environments where they resist corrosion but in some specialised applications, such as strong alkali contaminant, nickel or commercially pure nickel would be superior.


    Nickel copper alloys find wide application in oil refining and marine applications where long corrosion-free life is required. Because of good thermal conductivity of nickel copper alloys, they are frequently are used for heat exchangers where sea water is one of the fluids concerned.

    Nickel Chromium Base Alloys

    These nickel chromium base alloys are used extensively in applications where heat resistance and/or corrosion resistance is required. In some members of the group, where conditions are less demanding, some nickel is replaced by iron to decrease the overall cost.

    Metals fail at high temperatures by both oxidation (scaling) and through a loss in strength. Alloys in this class are designed to resist failure from both of these mechanisms. Nickel alloys are not suitable for high temperature sulphur rich environments.

    Where corrosion resistance is significant, molybdenum is used as an alloying addition in nickel chromium based alloys.


    This group of alloys are frequently sold under trade name specifications but most are listed in the Unified Numbering System.

    The more recent nickel chromium base alloys in these groups also have a wide range of ancillary elements added to give special properties - some of these can be quite complicated and require very close control over composition and heat treatment.

    How to Identify a Small Block and a High Nickel Block on a Chevy

    Chevrolet has produced the small block engine in dozens of different configurations since it was first introduced in the mid-1950s. General Motors alloys all of its cast iron blocks with a certain amount of nickel, but for some time, cast them with a far higher nickel content than it does today.

    The high nickel content made the block stronger and more resistant to wear, but it must be used with caution. Many high-nickel content blocks were cast with relatively thin cylinder walls, and can only be safely over-bored by about 0.030-inch.


    Step 1

    Identify the block casting number, which you can find on the top of the bell-housing ridge (where the transmission connects). If you see a "++" after the casting number, then it's a high-nickel block.


    Step 2

    Remove the harmonic balancer and crankshaft pulley from the front of the crankshaft. Remove the water pump and timing cover from the front of the engine. Identify the block casting just above the crankshaft main journal.


    Note the numbers you see there.

    They indicate the block's nickel and tin content by volume. If you see both an 010 and 020, the block has 10 percent tin and 20 percent nickel by volume. An 010 or 020 by itself indicates the block's nickel content as 10 or 20 percent, respectively.

    You don't need a $30,000.00 XRF to identify metals, years ago every scrap yard had a small bottle of nitric acid, a file and test tube, file a clean spot on the test metal then a drop of acid and wait for a color change.

    When you have a mixed bag of ions and need to separate them to individually identify each metal ion, use Paper Chromatography.

    Ammen covers this topic in his book refining precious metals only in second edition. in some detail but google is your friend also.

    The metal pins used to pass current through a vacuum tube, ic's and cpu pins are made from Kovar.

    Kovar® a Controlled Expansion, Nickel-Iron Alloy.

    Kovar Alloy, also known as ASTM F15, NILO® K, Pernifer® 2918, Rodar® and Dilver® P1 is a controlled expansion alloy. It is a Nickel Iron alloy with 29% Nickel, 17% Cobalt and the remaining balance is Iron.

    The expansion characteristics of Kovar match both borosilicate (Pyrex) glass and alumina ceramics, making it one of the most popular of the controlled expansion alloys for hermetic sealing applications. Kovar is produced to ensure good properties for machining and deep drawing, and is a porosity free product.

    You’ll find Kovar utilized in power tubes, microwave tubes, transistors, diodes, hybrid packages, and other kinds of scientific instruments.

    Do you think with colbalt being this high, there would be a strong market for all the used/old laptop and cellphone Lithium-ion batteries? Or is there not enough cobalt in them to be worth recycling? I know some buyers will buy them for a few cents a lb but have heard they arent real;ly in demand or worth it to recycle

    Nickel silver, Maillechort, German silver, Argentan, new silver, nickel brass, albata, alpacca, is a copper alloy with nickel and often zinc. The usual formulation is 60% copper, 20% nickel and 20% zinc. Nickel silver is named due to its silvery appearance, but it contains no elemental silver unless plated.

    Some silver plated flatware that I have de plated, the green color is nickle chloride.= from the salt cell.

    Want to know where to sell your bulk lot of scrap laptop and cell phone battery's.

    I would think any buyer in the USA would do some preparation like shredding the battery;s to remove the plastic and just ship the precious metals sludge in drum.s

    If China still has an Embassy open in your country contact one of their commodity experts to arrange export and payment.

    Zhejiang Huayou Cobalt — that for years has supplied some of the world’s largest battery makers. They, in turn, have produced the batteries found inside products such as Apple’s iPhones — a finding that calls into question corporate assertions that they are capable of monitoring their supply chains for human rights abuses or child labor.

    Apple, in response to questions from The Post, acknowledged that this cobalt has made its way into its batteries. The Cupertino, Calif.-based tech giant said that an estimated 20 percent of the cobalt it uses comes from Huayou Cobalt. Paula Pyers, a senior director at Apple in charge of supply-chain social responsibility, said the company plans to increase scrutiny of how all its cobalt is obtained.

    Pyers also said Apple is committed to working with Huayou Cobalt to clean up the supply chain and to addressing the underlying issues, such as extreme poverty, that result in harsh work conditions and child labor.
