BIG screen tv's... the old ones

I had picked up a 62'' and a 52'' big screen TV the other day... Wasn't much except for the projection stop light looking thing.



But man I was in for a surprise.. There's some kind of oil or KY jelly liquid inside those lenses, had to mop it up with 2 towels off my floor when i unscrewed the wrong thing lol.

Thank god for no carpet though.

YEAHHHHH. I've broken down around 30 of these so far, have about 40 still in storage. They're fun. 3 BIG aluminum heat sinks. I believe that oil is "optical oil". I swear that stuff does NOT evaporate. EVER.

Glad I read that before I hacked up the one on my back porch and created an oil slick. I've found a bunch of those lately, seems like anyone who has one is looking for a place to dump it.

According to my electronics shop man, the liquid in between the "crt gun" (glass tube) and the colored lense is actually anti-freeze. It is a clear anti-freeze,
which makes sense because I bet those babys get hot!

And don't forget that the housing that is between the lense and the "tube" is cast aluminum, that is of course in the rear projection 3 tube set-up.

Probably is mineral oil to absorb heat away from the components.

I think that video said something about using mineral oil in biodiesel. Or maybe I heard it from somewhere else. I just tried looking it up and couldn't really find a conclusion on it but if it's true than the stuff might be worth some money to the green folk.

I've messed around with a lot a car motors in my life, and the liquid in those housings sure feel like anti-freeze, it leaves that tacky
feeling like glycol on your hands.....maybe different manufacturers use different stuff?? I've scrapped a lot of sonys......

Boy I wish I had looked at this thread before I tore apart my TV, I was stripping it in my dining room because I didn't want to carry it outside by myself (those things are heavy). I unscrewed the tube from the aluminum and splash, all over me, my kitchen table, and the floor. What a mess. All the wife could do is laugh at me as I was cleaning up the mess. Oh well, now the other 2 will be taken apart in the garage after I drain the oil out of them. LOL

Same with the oil spilling out.....

Actually was a bit dismayed with the whole setup, not much metal to scrap out of it considering the 3 CRT guns.
Just some mirrors, lens/plastic sheet & 3 cool glass lenses & small copper amount, Ali heatsinks & 1 cool toroid tranny for keeps.

I had a big tv just like that, it only had three things of copper that i took out, so i put it at the road.The next day i saw some junkers outside going through it and they were out there for about an hour, so i finally went out there to ask them what they were doing and apparently they were taking off somthing called condensers. He said you can get about 2 bucks a piece? Iv never heard of this has anyone else?

I usualy get the three copper yokes, and or the 3 glass stop light assembly sold as 'weight'. Also the circuit board and cut out the wires and thow them in the wire bucket
